Today is St George's Day, the patron saint of our country.

How does Southampton Council recognise it? It doesn’t.

The Bargate flagpole stands empty at 0937 this morning.

The council is quick enough to fly flags for causes conducive to its political objectives, but clearly pride in our country is nowhere on its list of priorities. The Flag of St George would have flown proudly over the Bargate when Henry V passed through it on his way to France. I wonder what punishment Henry would have inflicted on the burghers of Southampton if they had been so neglectful in 1415.

The council’s contempt for the town’s infrastructure is no more blatantly shown than its inability to even correct the clock on Holyrood Church, which is still showing GMT weeks after BST came in; this picture taken at 0942 today. I witnessed crowds of cruise passengers staring at the clock, and then at their timepieces in disbelief as they waited for the jacks to chime. Welcome to sloppy Southampton.

Small things, but the devil is always in the detail, and this incompetence is reflected in every aspect of the council stewardship of the built environment and cultural legacy in the city.
