FIREFIGHTERS rescued 11 people and "several" cats after a fire broke out in a Southampton block of flats.
Smoke filled the stairwell and a 71-year-old woman was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Three other people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, and in total 11 people were led to safety following the incident, which happened at about 5pm on Sunday.
The cats were checked over by an animal rescue specialist.
A Hampshire Fire and Rescue statement says: "Crews from Hightown and St Mary’s used hoses to extinguish the fire and fans to clear the smoke to allow the residents to leave the block.
"The fire was found to have started on the cooker in the flat’s kitchen."
The fire was extinguished by 6.30pm.
