PUPILS and staff at a college in the Eastleigh borough are celebrating after receiving praise from Ofsted.

The Fair Oak-based Wyvern College has been rated ‘good’ by inspectors who praised the achievement of students and the leadership and management team.

The involvement of the college in the local community also impressed Ofsted officials.

Their report said: “Students’ achievement is good and improving.

“Disabled students and those with special educational needs make particularly good progress because they are supported by a very strong special educational needs and learning support team.

“Teaching is good overall and there is some that is outstanding, particularly in mathematics, art, history, religious education, physical education and food technology.”

According to the report, students praised the passion and commitment of their teachers, and think teaching is good.

The inspectors said the curriculum remains personalised to the needs of individual pupils.

The work of headteacher Alan Newton, who has been in charge for the past 10 years, was also praised.

Mr Newton welcomed the report.

He said: “The inspection team were overwhelmingly positive about everything they saw.

“The students were an absolute great credit to the college, and the final judgement certainly reflects the phenomenal effort and continued hard work undertaken by all staff and governors.”
