THE grandson of a Southampton man killed in a cycling accident has raised several thousand pounds for Isle of Wight and Hampshire Air Ambulance.

John Morris, 67, of Grainger Gardens, Southampton, died after being involved in a collision with a lorry on Portsmouth Road last December.

Before his death John was assisted by crews from the air ambulance.

His grandson Joshua Smith decided to raise money for helicopter service to thank them for helping his grandfather.

The 12-year-old Oasis Academy pupil, who initially wanted to £1,000 by John’s birthday on April 18, has smashed his initial target raising a whopping £3,600 in just four months.

Josh raised the money by holding various events including a teddy bear’s picnic as well as asking for donations online.

His mother, Rebecca Morris said: “Joshie and my dad were inseparable.

“They had such an incredible bond. I’m so proud of him.”

Josh said: “I miss my granddad terribly. and I would like to make him proud.

“The Air Ambulance is an incredible charity that relies entirely on public donations and desperately need as much help as possible”

Director of Fund raising at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Rachael Leaman said: “Joshie is a superstar and an inspiration to us all.

“He smashed his fundraising targets and showed incredible determination and tenacity for someone of his age.

“A huge thank you to Joshie from all of us at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for helping us to continue saving lives in our community”.

After the crash a 50-year-old man from Stockport was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and released under investigation.
