BRITAIN – and the world – ground to a halt to watch the big moment.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Saturday afternoon.

Prince Harry has now been made the Duke of Sussex by the Queen, with Ms Markle becoming the Duchess of Sussex.

The prince, who is sixth in line to the throne, also received the titles Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.

Thousands of well-wishers lined the streets in Windsor, with crowds camping out overnight to secure the best viewing spots.

Closer to home, thousands of Hampshire residents toasted the royal couple, with street parties taking place in the sunshine across the county.

It was a truly global event, and had the feel of being somewhat different to other royal weddings.

From the type of cake to the decision to invite 1,200 members of the public to enjoy the occasion in the grounds of Windsor Castle, there were several breaks with tradition.

Making it a more inclusive event is certainly a wise move, and there are high hopes that the pair will continue to modernise the royal family as the monarchy evolves.

We wish the newlyweds well.
