MORE than 100 objections have been filed after a row erupted over plans for a £600,000 renovation of a college’s sports facilities.

Residents are demanding the proposal to build a new 3G pitch at Itchen College be withdrawn due to issues surrounding noise levels, parking infrastructure and light pollution.

Since the college submitted the plan to Southampton City Council on May 1, 111 locals have raised their concerns.

Many are calling for the scheme to be sent to the city council’s planning and rights of way panel so a discussion can be held.

If successful, a new type of artificial pitch will replace the current grass pitch, as well as associated fencing, six floodlights and storage containers.

The aim is to allow sports to be played in all weathers, with the facilities opened up to the community.

Sally Broomfield, of nearby Spring Road, said the proposal would have a “negative impact” on the quality of life not only for her family but others living on the street. Doreen Carter, of Heath Road, said the thought of increased parking problems “horrifies me”.

Jeff Roberts, college finance director, previously said if the application is approved by the council, work could start in September. He added: “I can understand people’s concerns because it is an unknown and we don’t want to upset people.”

“It won’t generate any extra traffic, and instead of staff and students using the car park inside the college, out of hours it will be the users of the site.

“We carried out surveys to ensure that the plans would have minimum impact on residents and have changed the layout of the pitch accordingly.”

The application deadline has been extended to June 1 for residents to voice their opinions.
