A SERIES of talks at a city centre gallery will start today.
The events are an attempt to "counter" the all-male perspective of the John Hansard Gallery's opening exhibition by world renowned German painter Gerhard Richter.
As reported the solo show at newly opened JHG in Above Bar includes 48 portraits by Richter of men he thought could be seen as a father figure.
The paintings were copied from an encyclopaedia, and include portraits of men including Albert Einstein, Ilich Tchaikovsky, Oscar Wilde, Thomas Mann, and Franz Kafka.
The subjects, all born between 1824 and 1904, are white central European and North American men prominent in the fields of literature, science, philosophy, and music.
A spokesperson for the gallery said: "Richter’s work depicts 48 portraits of influential figures of the time. To counter the 48 men depicted, twelve female academics and influential figures in Southampton have been invited to interpret Richter’s work and discuss the hidden histories of women."
The talks take place every Thursday from 4-5pm and are free.
