SPORTS stars and doctors are among the Hampshire figures who have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Among the names are health staff, businessmen and community leaders.

Billionaire Jim Ratcliffe has been awarded a knighthood for his services to business and investment.

The businessman, the UK's richest man, who lives in a luxury mansion near Beaulieu in the New Forest, topped the Sunday Times rich list this year as the boss of the chemical company INEOS.

Daily Echo:

His worth is an estimated £21 billion.

The 65-year-old spent six years trying to persuade the New Forest National Park Authority to allow him to redevelop his secluded site, with the Mancunian entrepreneur suffering a series of setbacks.

Ratcliffe founded the INEOS chemical company in 1998, and owns two-thirds of it.

Last month, he was named at the top of the UK rich list. His first job was with Esso, but his career then led him to study finance and accounting.

The company moved its head office from Hampshire to Switzerland in April of 2010.

A number of other county figures have also been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Hampshire County Council’s director of children’s services Steve Crocker has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s honours list.

He has been recognised for the services to children’s social care in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

He said: “This was wholly unexpected and an amazing surprise and privilege.

“One thing I would like to make clear is that I very much see this honour as recognition of all the fantastic work that my colleagues in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight do every day.”

Mr Crocker’s responsibilities for Hampshire County Council include education and the safeguarding of vulnerable children in the county and on the Isle of Wight.

Sports star Lizzy Yarnold has become a Member of the British Empire for her services to Winter Olympic sport.

Daily Echo:

The Shedfield-based athlete made history by becoming the first British Winter Olympian to win successive titles earlier this year.

A doctor from Romsey has also been awarded a British Empire Medal for his services to conservation in the historic market town.

Dr Frank MacDonald Akerman is a trustee and has been an honourary secretary with Romsey and District Society’s Buildings Preservation Trust.

A branch of the town society that now boasts more than 1,000 members, Dr Akerman has been awarded the BEM for his efforts in conserving buildings in the town.

The conservation trust was set up in 1975.

Others from the county to be recognised include Professor Keith Palmer, who was awarded an OBE for services to occupational health and medicine in Southampton. He’s also a chair on the industrial injuries advisory council.

Sarah Haughey, of Ringwood, has also become a Member of the British Empire for services to nursing.

Carol Ann Jackson is now a MBE for services to education for her role as the chair of governors at Fordingbridge Infant School. Paul Travis Murray has become a Member of the British Empire for services to charity and community of Winchester. Dr Nigel Watson is also a MBE for services to general practice.

Mayor of Test Valley, Ian Carr has become a Member of the British Empire for his services to local government and the community in the borough of Test Valley.

The former leader of Test Valley Borough Council said he was “chuffed to bits” after receiving the letter in the post.

Daily Echo:

Cllr Carr stepped down as leader of the council last year, a post he had held for the past 18 years.

Currently, for the second time in his career, he is also the mayor of the borough.

Speaking of his joy at receiving the award, he said it was something he ‘never expected’.

Cllr Carr said: “I had a letter through the post and it had the word ‘cabinet’ all over it.

“I either thought I was in trouble or it was an award!

“I’ve been in local government long enough to know what those letters look like.

“I am absolutely chuffed to bits with it. It has been horrible and painful keeping it from my closest family, friends and colleagues.”

As well as his services to Test Valley, the councillor has also been awarded for his services to local government as a whole, something he said made him feel proud.

Cllr Carr added: “It is a proud feeling for me.

“I have been in this career for many years and you never quite know if you are doing a good job or not, despite what people may be telling you.”

A nurse based at Southampton General Hospital has become a Member of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for her services to helping vulnerable adults.

Sarah Charters, a consultant nurse and emergency department mental health lead at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, is among more than 60 NHS staff recognised for their achievements.

Sarah, who has also served in the Armed Forces, said: “It is a privilege to receive this award and I feel honoured that the work my colleagues and I have undertaken to improve acute hospital services for vulnerable patients has received such recognition.

“I am always delighted when any opportunity arises to focus on the important work being carried out in Southampton and ultimately, my hope is that we can share the good news about what we are doing in Southampton with other acute hospital trusts so the work we are doing has a wider impact.”

Sarah has introduced a vulnerable adult support team which works alongside clinicians and mental health professionals seven days a week to manage issues such as domestic abuse, homelessness and substance abuse.
