MORE than 5,000 visitors came to Southampton for the city’s first Armed Forces Day.

The event has been going for ten years – but this was the first time Hampshire troops paraded the streets.

Organiser Kate Wood said: "It’s nice that we’ve done it this year as it’s the RAF 100th anniversary and the Royal Logistical Corps’ 25th."

The former RAF telecommunications officer added: “Southampton doesn’t celebrate the armed forces but I felt that as a city we should.”

Southampton City Council’s community and leisure chief Councillor Satvir Kaur said the event was "a credit to the organisers" and added: "They have worked really hard to put on such an amazing event.

"We had people all ages and backgrounds.

"It’s really important that we mark the end of WWI."
