Organisers of Let’s Rock Southampton scored a resounding success with a day of back-to-back music and World Cup football as record crowds of more than 12,000 people celebrated on the Common.

Any fears the quarter final on Saturday may have kept revellers away were soon put aside as the last minute addition of a big screen ensured the crowds were able to roar England to victory.

Kicking off the action was Go West, who opened with Don’t Look Down.

They were followed by Snap!, Aswad and a Retrobates Medley featuring Hazell Dean, Peter Coyle, Brother Beyond, Fuzzbox and Bow Wow Wow’s Annabella.

Wendy James, from Transvision Vamp, gave a storming post-punk performance, including I Want Your Love, Baby I Don’t Care and If Looks Could Kill. People were torn between watching the match or Kim Appleby and Heather Small, who performed Search for a Hero - dedicating it to the England team and urging the crowd to join in and support the squad.

At half time Black Lace had the crowd doing the Conga around the Common , and even onto the stage, and Pat Sharp declared: “It’s official - it’s 1 nil, it’s coming home!

“Anyone from Sweden can do one,” before playing a selection of football anthems.

It was a real party atmosphere.

After the victory, The Blockheads continued a set that included Reasons to be Cheerful and Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick.

Scotsman, Midge Ure, teased the crowd saying: “I believe you guys won at some sports event - curling wasn’t it?”

He went on to perform Fade to Grey and Vienna.

The sensational Sister Sledge delivered an uplifting set that raised the energy level for the crowd, with a selection of hits that included Living in Ecstasy, Frankie and Good Times.

They ended with We Are Family, summing up the mood on the Common.

Penultimate act, ABC, were in good voice performing crowd pleasers such as Poison Arrow, Look of Love and All of my Heart.

Time seems to have stood still for Adam Ant, 63, who looks and sounds just as he did in the ‘80s.

He gave a mesmerising performance that captivated the crowd, with hits including Antmusic, Friend or Foe and Stand and Deliver.

For the first time the show ended with a firework finale, closing a truly spectacular day.
