CIVIC chiefs in Southampton are set to discuss plans for a massive outdoor screen ahead of the World Cup semi-finals.

City bosses will meet later today to consider the possibility of a screen showing the football match live on Wednesday when England will face Croatia in the World Cup semi-final.

But Guildhall Square has already been ruled out as a possible venue.

The area is set to play host celebrations for Southampton Solent University's graduation week until Friday.

Cllr Satvir Kaur, cabinet member for communities, culture and leisure, said: "We are really pleased and excited that England have come that far in the World Cup. Ideally we would love a screen for the coming match.

"Our cultural quarter would be ideal but that is being used for Solent graduation week. We are currently seeking a site and viable alternative. One of the concerns are health and safety around the big screen."

Cllr Kaur said concerns come after fans climbed on buses in Above Bar Street following England's win over Sweden on Saturday.

A man holding an England flag was seen dancing on moving buses and jumping from one bus to the other.

"It would be a shame for a couple of individuals to ruin it for anyone else," Cllr Kaur added.

She also said she hopes a decision will be made today.
