A SLEDGEHAMMER wielding group attempted to smash their way into a Southampton convenience store.

Police say the three men attempted to use the sledgehammer to break into the back door of the Co-Op on Bassett Green Road.

But when they failed, the group fled the scene.

Officers are now appealing for information about the incident, which took place on July 6, between 12.25am and 1.15am.

Police say one of the men was wearing black trousers, a dark padded coat, a black hat, black trainers with white toe caps and a light coloured scarf covering his face.

A second man was wearing a dark coat with the hood up, black padded gloves and grey combat-style trousers.
