JUST days after an executive jet burst into flames in a spectacular crash on the M27, the emergency services were back at Eastleigh, dealing with another plane drama.

Unlike the motorway disaster, which miraculously claimed no lives, the full alert which took place on June 6, 1993, was only make-believe.

The combined Hampshire emergency forces and volunteer first aiders were tested to the extremes as they responded to an aviation disaster which had all the ingedients of a horror movie.

The scenario involved a plane falling short of Southampton Airport, crashing into a packed train and exploding on impact.

Bodies were strewn about and passengers trapped in derailed carriages with the risk of fire spreading. There were several walking wounded and somebody had been electricuted after coming into contact with the third rail.

As if that wasn’t enough for emergency services, there was also the possibility of toxic chemicals as the major exercise developed into a full-scale emergency.
