POLICE are continuing to investigate an accident in which a pensioner was killed and another pedestrian suffered life-changing injuries.

Two women were standing near a cash machine outside the entrance to the Morrisons store in Spruce Drive, Totton, when they were hit by Peugeot 206.

Both casualties suffered serious leg injuries in the crash, which took place in front of horrified shoppers on Wednesday.

An 86-year-old woman from Chandler's Ford was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where she died a short time later. A 22-year-old woman, also from Chandler's Ford, has been left with life-changing injuries.

The driver of the car, a 76-year-old woman from Totton, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Last night police confirmed that no arrests had been made but refused to release any further details about the scope and progress of the investigation.

Morrisons staff rushed to the women's aid and were greeted by scenes described as "horrific" by people who were outside the supermarket at the time.

The car hit the two women after shooting between a brick pillar and an iron bollard directly in front of the ATM.

The store remained opened but part of the car park was sealed off for several hours while officers investigated the cause of the crash.

A police photographer could be seen taking pictures of the badly-damaged car and a row of yellow markers indicated the route taken by the vehicle in the seconds before it hit the cashpoint.

Dozens of people have taken to social media to express their shock and sadness,

Gemma Ireland wrote: "Just so awful for the poor people involved. The paramedics and police are doing an amazing job."

Caz Moor added: "As were the staff, despite being extremely distressed by what they were dealing with, especially those first on the scene."

Morrisons said it was helping with the police investigation but declined to make any further comment.
