EASTLEIGH is set to be transformed into a swirl of colours once again as a popular festival returns.

Thousands are expected to flock to Leigh Road Recreation Ground on July 22 to take part in this year’s Mela festival.

Mela is the Sanskrit word for ‘meeting, fair and celebrations of all kinds’.

Organised by the Eastleigh Asian Welfare and Cultural Association (AWCA), Mela brings different cultures together and offers residents a day of family fun.

Lots of food stalls, activities and live music will be entertaining residents during the day.

Masterchef winner Shelina Permalloo will run cookery demonstrations.

Meanwhile, international Bollywood singer Sazia Judge and the Abba’s Angels, an Abba tribute band, will entertain residents throughout the day.

Atiya and Caroline, co-chair of AWCA, said: “We’re very proud that once again we can host Mela for the people of Eastleigh.

“It’s always such a great atmosphere with people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying music, dancing, food and activities together celebrating the real meaning of cultural fusion.”

An international Fijian dance group will also perform. Other activities including pottery workshops will be run during the day.

The event will start at noon and run until 6pm.
