POLICE have charged a man after a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a crash in Southampton.

Steven Walden, 22, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder yesterday, following a crash between a car and a bike on Weston Lane.

Police have now charged Walden, of Acacia Road, Southampton, with causing grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving after a 19-year-old motorcyclist suffered life threatening injuries in the crash.

Walden also faces a charge of perverting the course of justice, possession of an offensive weapon and driving without a licence and insurance.

Police say he is due to appear before Southampton Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning (21 July).

It comes following the crash, which took place outside Chamberlayne Leisure Centre, on Weston Lane.

Police say the crash took place around 4am on Thursday, July 19.

The 19-year-old suffered life threatening injuries in the crash and was rushed to University Hospital Southampton for treatment.

Following the crash, police arrested Walden and three other people – a 17-year-old girl, an 18-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, all from Southampton, on suspicion of attempted murder.

Another two men, aged 20 and 21, were later arrested - again on suspicion of attempted murder.

The unnamed five were released without charge earlier today and police will take no further action against them.
