BOGUS car salesmen has been reportedly operating in Chandler's Ford.

Hampshire Constabulary say a man in his 20s was trying to sell his car on eBay and was contacted by a potential buyer.

Two men came to his house in Westfield Crescent at about 8.40pm on Wednesday 18 July.

The victim became suspicious and felt that one man was trying to distract him while the other was looking under the bonnet of the vehicle.

One man asked to see the vehicle’s documentation and this was just inside the victim's front door.

As he returned, the victim saw one of the men pouring a liquid into the cooling system.

The men then asked to take the vehicle for a test drive. The victim refused and asked them to leave.

Both men were described as being 20-30 years old. One is described as Asian and the other as having an eastern European accent. They left in a Volkswagen.

Hampshire Constabulary said: "This is a known scam where potential buyers cause damage to the vehicle which, when test driven, appears to be faulty. As a result they ask to buy the car at a discounted price.

"Victims often feel guilty if the buyers claim to have driven long distances to view the car, which they now claim is not as described.

"If possible, never leave the vehicle unattended and always try to have someone with you when potential buyers visit.

"Don't be pressured into moving your vehicle if you suspect that something untoward has happened and keep your mobile phone with you.

"If you believe you have been the victim of a similar fraud, we encourage you to report this to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040."
