FIRE crews rushed to tackle a blaze that broke out on Southampton Common on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters from St Mary's and Eastleigh fire stations raced to the scene, at Southampton Old Cemetery after a number of calls were received by emergency services.

Video footage seen by the Daily Echo appeared to show flames above the tree line with smoke billowing into the sky.

In a post on their website, The Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery (FoSOC) said the blaze had caused a lot of damage to the site.

A spokesman added that the cemetery is "an accident waiting to happen due to the over grown areas of long grass, bramble and nettles, all of which has become increasingly dry due to the hot weather and no strimming".

The fire did not appear to affect the Gung-Ho! obstacle course, which was being held on The Common.

The Daily Echo has attempted to contact both Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and FoSOC for comment.
