POLICE have collected more than 15,000 hours of CCTV and over 900 items as part of their probe into the murder of Southampton teenager Lucy McHugh.

New figures from the police show the size of the investigation into the death of the teenager, whose body was found at the Southampton Sports Centre more than a fortnight ago.

Since then, officers say they have and continue to sift through thousands of hours of CCTV footage from more than 250 locations.

These include homes, shops and council buildings across the city.

Officers have also inspected more than 900 items, including sharp implements and clothing, collected during searches.

Head of the investigation, Detective Superintendent Paul Barton, described it as one of the force’s “biggest investigations” in recent years.

He added that over 200 officers had been involved so far.

The investigation was launched following the discovery of Lucy’s body in a wooded area of the Sports Centre on Thursday, July 26.

Police previously had the 13-year-old’s last known location as her home in Mansel Road East around 9am the previous morning.

But last week, officers uncovered CCTV of the Redbridge Community School student walking past Tesco Express on the corner of Coxford Road and Lordswood Road.

The short footage, shown to fans at St Mary’s on Sunday, showed Lucy by the shop at 9.30am on Wednesday, July 25.

The shop is a short distance from the Sports Centre, where she was found the following morning.

Police are still asking the public for information about her whereabouts before and after the sighting.

Last week, Crimestoppers launched a £10,000 appeal for information leading to the conviction of Lucy’s killer.

A 24-year-old Southampton man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and sexual activity with a child.

The same man was charged with an allegation of failing to co-operate with the police probe and remanded in custody until 31 August.
