THREE generations of one family are urging residents to unite against the UK's biggest killer- Dementia.

Emma Pedley, 43, from Southampton is encouraging people to get involved with the next Southampton Memory Walk on Sunday, 8 September, on Southampton Common to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

The 43-year-old will be taking part in the walk with her daughter, Georgia Redmond, for Emma's Mum, Margaret, who was diagnosed with dementia five years ago.

Emma said: “My mum, Margaret, has Alzheimer’s disease and has had it for five years now. We want to do the walk for her and to raise money to fight this horrible disease.

"My mum has good days where she’s the kind woman she always has been, and bad days where she gets upset and confused.

“Dementia doesn’t just affect the person with the condition, it affects everyone around them.

"I don’t want my daughter or grandchildren to get dementia so the sooner we find a cure, the better."

Emma will be doing the walk with her Mum, who will be in a wheelchair.

Last year, a total of 2,470 people took part in the Southampton Memory Walk and 1,443 supporters have already registered to take part in the walk this year.

Gary Walker, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for Southampton, said: "Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes.

“Dementia devastates lives, but every pound raised through memory Walk will help us provide vital information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting for people affected by the condition."
