I READ with interest Mr Hinds’ letter on August 15 on air quality in Southampton. Like him, we want to see further improvements in air quality in the city.
As a port, we have recently published our Air Quality Strategy with plans to help accelerate the air quality improvements that have been taking place for years. Improvements at the port range from 100% electric vehicle use to rail use expansion. In addition, working with shipping lines, we today have ships which operate using LNG (liquefied natural gas) or solar power when in port and by 2020 we anticipate 20% of cruise passengers will be on ships using LNG. LNG has essentially zero NOX emissions and it’s these emissions that are a focus for the council at the moment.
Our Air Quality Strategy sets out many other measures we propose, including the introduction of shore power by 2020 as part of our plans to ensure both cleaner air and more jobs in our city.
