PLANS to add a smoking shelter to a Ringwood pub may be stubbed out by district council planning chiefs, despite getting the thumbs up from the town council.

Finn McCouls has applied to build an outdoor shelter for smokers on the back of its grade II listed pub in Market Square.

Ringwood Town Council backed plans for the dining area, a covered walkway, and patio doors from the main building.

However, New Forest District Council, which has the final say on development, said the plans would cause "significant harm" to the listed building and recommended that the planning committee refuse the application at a special meeting tomorrow.

If the law states no smoking in public places, do these shelters come within the law or not? Or is mamby pamby britain being its usual non committal self?

The Government didn't think through their plans very well. Looking forward we now have leper colonies gathering outside buildings instead of in dedicated areas/rooms "on campus".

Bellmoor school is an example of where the problem moved from a smoking room (away from the students) to large groups of teachers now standing outside the main gates every break time. Something similar has happened at the General hospital as well.

I am very much an anti-smoker but never supported these new laws. The system was working very well before.

as far as im aware, as long as the shelter is not more than 50% enclosed its legal. although ive had to stand in the cold and rain because i don't smoke and found inside a pub to be unbearable and there were no shelters for people like me. they will never give up if you make it to comfortable for them.
