New threat to library hours

A CAMPAIGN to save a Southampton library could be revived after its opening hours have been targeted in the council's budget.

Eight months after residents in Bitterne Park celebrated saving Cobbett Road Library from closure they now face a big cut in its opening hours.

Under a draft £166m budget, Cobbett Road, Burgess Road, Woolston, Thornhill and Weston libraries will see a reduction in opening hours by an average of 9.5 hours to save £65,000.

The savings are among a hit list drawn up by Tory council leaders to save £10m and give residents a below inflation council tax increase next year.

As the Cobbett Road is only open four days a week, campaigners fear closure by stealth.

Rachel Hickman said: "The use is going to go down then they will say it's not being used enough to stay open.

"Our concern is they shouldn't be cutting from library services. They should be seen as a priority."

However Councillor John Hannides, Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said the reductions were a result of mounting budget pressures and the Conservatives had honoured their pledge to keep the Cobbett Road open in "difficult circumstances."

Cllr Hannides said libraries had been "allowed to limp along without any vision" and a review, to report back next year, would set out an enhanced service for the 21st century.

He said he could not pre-empt its findings but that voluntary groups could play a part in opening libraries for longer.

The Save the Cobbett Road Library campaign was backed by Itchen MP John Denham, now Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities, and Skills, as well as Tory ward councillors Peter Baillie and Phil Williams (pictured).

The council's draft budget will go out to consultation until February.

Well the Tory Councillors will not be able to back this campaign as it is their idea to reduce the hours. Still compared to the other service cuts this is nothing.....have a look at what else is in their proposals...but they did manage to give themselves a big pay rise !!

Well, there's a shock. The library in the Tory heartland got saved last time and they are now saying they'll keep it open. Of course they will. They only care about the bits of the map that are blue. Oh, and they'll pay lip service to Swaythling, I appreciate the concerns the residents had regarding the transit site but, really, they made a deal with a party who hadn't given two hoots about them for the twenty odd years previous and only when they saw the chance to finish off the division of the city that the electoral commission started to make this apolitically impotent city further divided did they look to the people living the other side of Bassett.

Oh, and di you see them saying how well they'd done with the Audit Commission report adn how that was all down to them - hmmmm... funny, I could've SWORN the Audit Commission went in either at the very end of the Lib Dem rule or right at the start of the Tory-Goss junta when they still ahdn't a clue what they were doing - so how can they take credit.

Sorry, rant over :-)

Apologies for my lax spelling above - the fever gripped me and spelling came secondary to bile. Cheers.

Is that the Conservative Councillor with the really girly laugh at the front of the picture? It is innit!

Lawks a Mussy, I thought Young Conservatives had all been eradicated from the gene poiol by excessive inbreeding but, no, there's loads of 'em cramming the Civic.

At lest they can now say they've represented their community verciferously when they decide to close it. 'Look we tried, but we couldn't convince ourselves not to do it. I blame Gordon Brown' condescended Samuels the 'lawyer'.

Sorry Cobbett Road, I think you're wrong. They're not THAT trustworthy. God save us all, I'm moving somehwere where they believe society still exists...ummm...wher

I think their fears are right - 4 days already seems low, and if you reduce it by another day it will reach a point of non viability. Either cost per day, cost per user, or just number of users. And then it will be hard to argue that it should be kept open when it is eventually serving a tiny group at high cost.

Perhaps the council could save money by not selling the efficient/money making bits to C*apita.

Or even just cut a few hours from the very big libraries which have capacity to spare.

Oh, and for the (presumably) Lib Dem whingers posting here, you had your chance to make this city better and you FAILED.

Sorry non-partisan, I am not a lib dem (nor labour for that matter) I just really dread the Tories in all shapes and forms having started my working life just as they got in power nationally in the late 70's and having seen across the country in various authorities what happens when the mad children get given the keys to the sweet shop. I agree the Lib Dems stuffed up the city, and Labour had a less than glorious last couple of years in charge before the Libs got in (Goss switching sides again I seem to remember!).

Not whingeing, just railing aginst what the blue third will get up to!
