Women's Football: Viking vengeance is sweet

7:42pm Tuesday 13th November 2001

REVENGE was sweet for Bushey Rangers Ladies in their tough home fixture against Division Two leaders Vikings on Sunday, November 11.

Bushey were still smarting from a 5-0 defeat inflicted on them by Vikings earlier in the season, but they produce a tremendous team effort to sweep aside their opponents 6-0.

After initial forays by both sides had come to nothing, Rangers scored three times in a 15-minute first half spell.

First, Lisa Burrows showed superb skill by controlling the ball to score with a crashing left-foot volley, and then Stacey Gammell cut in from the left wing and hit a rasping drive that beat the keeper for pace.

Andrea Callender took the chance to get in on the act by resisting the strong challenge of a defender before thumping a shot into the corner of the net.

Vikings steadied the shop for the remainder of the first half, and for 20 minutes into the second, during which the teams were evenly matched, giving Bushey's Katie Wicks the opportunity to shine with an accomplished defensive display.

However, Rangers' pressure finally told in the last quarter of the match.

Callender completed a hat-trick by firstly running onto Anita Ticherafi's defence splitting pass, and then, after Burrows had skipped through several tackles, by picking up the resulting half chance.

Vanessa Pender rounded off the scoring by blasting the ball past the stranded keeper from close range, just before the full time whistle.

This result means Bushey have usurped Vikings from their table-topping position, and now sit two points clear at the summit.
