Hampshire's biggest ever crackdown on crime

2:00pm Wednesday 14th November 2007

comment Comments (66)   Have your say »

MORE THAN 800 police officers carried out dawn raids today in Hampshire's biggest ever crackdown on organised crime.

The officers, backed up by specialist armed teams, forced their way into flats and houses in the hunt for drugs and firearms dealers.

Latest police figures reveal that at least 50 people have been arrested.

Most of the 37 addresses were in the Southampton area with a further two in Winchester, one in Eastleigh and one in Hythe.

Officers from the force support unit based at Netley used steel enforcers to break down doors at the properties.

Simultaneous raids were also carried out in London, Slough and the Midlands. So far more than 50 warrants have been executed. It is expected that dozens of arrests will be made.

The raids are the latest phase of Operation Phoenix, a Hampshire pre-planned operation also designed to capture people forging ID documents and handling stolen goods.

The initiative, the biggest ever to be carried out in Hampshire, follows more than two years of planning by the serious and organised crime unit.

Great to see OUR police acting proactively instead of reactively to clear some of the vermin off our streets.

Two years to plan? Many of those convicted will get out of jail in less time than that. Let's hope the Police have started planning the next operation then.

Anything positive to say?!?

It probably took 2 years to plan to ensure that ALL the evidence is rock solid to gurantee convictions. Are you suggesting that these kind of operations shouldn't be carried out? The courts are responsible for sentencing - not police.

What a waste of money. 100 officers would have been more than enough. Our Police are useless.

My comment is aimed at the way these criminals will be out of jail all too soon. On the basis of the report, the Police will forever be playing catchup. I bet a number Police officers feel the same way.

Any vacumn created in the Hampshire area will soon be filled by criminals from over the border.

I hope all the evidence is rock solid etc. but it will be interesting to see just how many people are convicted and their sentences. I hope the Echo provides us with a detailed report in due course.

Nope, not for a load of weed dealers. If you read one of the numerous other parallel pieces of propaganda, ahem, stories I mean, the raids were on suppliers of class 'A' drugs

Can we stop moaning at the police for everything, though? As far as I'm concerned they're doing a fantastic job considering the enormous hurdles placed in their way. If my employer so actively sought to hinder me in my duties, I'd simply quit and get another job. Hats off to the boys in blue for limping on as best they can, they're completely powerless to do the job as intended, and any attempts to instigate change will result in their dismissal
