Ebbsfleet idea is non-starter - Lawrie

6:00am Saturday 17th November 2007

The little known Ebbsfleet United, who I gather play in the Blue Square Premier and are based in Kent, were this week on every back page of the sports newspapers.

They were formerly known as Gravesend & Northfleet but they haven't stopped at changing their name - they've now decided to do something which no other club, not only in England but the world of soccer, has ever done before.

The end result is that they now have joint ownership of the club by 20,000 people who have been prepared to pay £35 each to a website.

I have mentioned before that I have proudly conquered the fax machine and, at this stage, have little interest burying my head into a screen in addition to watching the odd TV programme.

I accept that things move forward.

Lots of amazing good things have happened because of the introduction of the internet and even in football management the odd bit of machinery has certainly helped managers .

If I was to go back in, I would certainly go with the times.

But this new idea of 20,000 members with access to every aspect of running a football club for me is a non-starter.

I will be extremely interested to see how long Liam Daish continues to work at the club.
