TWO ponies have been killed on the same New Forest road in separate accidents less than 12 hours apart.

Both collisions occurred on the B3054 Lymington to Dibden Purlieu road - one of the worst routes in the Forest for animal accidents.

A grey filly was killed in a hit-and-run collision at Hilltop, near Beaulieu, on June 2 at around 10.30pm.

A bay foal died after being hit by a vehicle at Crockford, on the Lymington to Hatchet Pond stretch of the road, on June 3 at 6.45am.

The Hilltop incident was the second hit-and-run fatality in the Forest in recent weeks.

A foal was so badly injured on the Blackfield to Exbury road on May 23 that it had to be humanely destroyed by one of the agisters.

The Verderers offer a £5,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of a driver involved in a hit-and-run.

The Forest was almost accident-free for weeks after the start of the lockdown, which coincided with the arrival of the lighter evenings.

But the figures have started to creep up again since the restrictions were eased and traffic increased.
