Binmen to decide next move

7:23am Friday 23rd November 2007

EASTLEIGH'S binmen are due to vote today on whether or not to take to the picket line for a third time.

As bins stand unemptied because the collectors are already four days behind in their rounds, crisis talks are continuing between Eastleigh Borough Council and unions.

Once these latest negotiations are over union chiefs will speak to the crews and hold a mass vote to decide what action should be taken next.

Unison branch secretary Dave Smith believes the talks could go either way, saying that there is a 50-50 chance of further strikes.

Mr Smith said: "Whatever happens today a decision will be made. Realistically I'd say there was a 50-50 chance of us having to strike again but lets hope we can resolve this without having to do that."

Binmen have already taken to the picket line for a total of three days following the introduction of changes to work practices by Eastleigh Borough Council.

I have suggested the same.

These "binmen" are writing their own suicide note. The voters in Eastleigh should press for a radical change in how how their garbage is processed. Competition, with the ability to choose your disposal company, should be available to private households, with the discount given on Council Tax.

FOUR DAYS?

You're having a laugh.

Our bin, that should have been emptied on 13 Nov, was finally emptied yesterday!

Who knows when this weeks will be emptied?

In order to "catch up", they are suspending the glass and garden waste collection!

I don't see how they will ever catch up now that the workers are going so much slower on their rounds in order to make sure they are not given any "extra tasks" when they have finished.

Put it out for tender now I say.

That's what I thought - but our glass got emptied yesterday - perhaps they were rogue glass stealers though ;-)

In Spain we have a daily collection from bins which are situated on the streets, shared by approx 10-20 villas each.

If we want to dispose of something like an old TV or furniture you just place it by the bin.

At approx 5:00am the local Council empty those bins - but just prior to that a lorry (operated by what appear to be Eastern Europeans) has already collected the other stuff. The system works quite well - with no questions asked.

so many loop holes and get-out clauses, anyone can strike these days. Just waiting for those toilet attendents to force a strike... icing on the cake.
Why do we make a big fuss about it, in the future they should just give them the boot.

A wheel fell off my bin last year, If I wheeled it on wheel it would almost topple over. Those lovely people from the council gave me a brand new wheelie bin.

As I understand it their contract of employment states a number of hours to be worked, not a quantity of bins to be emptied, so why should finishing a round quicker entitle them to knock off early?
Of course if it took longer than 35 hours to do the round rather than less the unions would be insisting that it's the hours worked that are important not the number of bins, so this is just hypocrisy and greed. Like Denzil says, get others in if these don't want to do it.

The binmen will be pushing their luck too far if they vote for a third wave of shirking.

The only support they have is from the Old Labour / Militant Worker dinosaurs, who appear to be trapped in the '70s like characters from 'Life On Mars'.

The trend of posts is clearly swinging towards Eastleigh locals who object to this outrageous disruption.

GET BACK TO WORK. RESOLVE YOUR DIFFERENCES WITH MANAGEMENT LIKE GROWN MEN.

The rest of us manage to do this without affecting the binmen's lives, they should try the same.

Exactly whats the difference, you chastise them for things you clearly have no understanding of . You whine and whinge and you accuse them of the same . They are not whining and whinging, cos they have taken action on something that goes back years. Like i said Neil pitta bread explained it all to you, but your just all wind a Psss and come out the the usual sun reader comment.

From what i can tell the bin men will be happy to work the full hours, only if they follow all the rules eastleigh council set them . Current rounds are worked out on the rounds not having breaks and not following certain rules. To do the rounds other wise would take up to 10 to 12 hours to do . The back log has proved that . But i can go on and on about that, and i already have so has pitta, but your too ignorant or thick to get it .

How will your council tax go up if the workers will do the same job but take longer over it . In fact it will cost you hundreds of thousands of pounds in extra diesel costs in having the crews work to eastleighs new regime. Because the lorries will be burning a couple of hours each per day.

If your happy with that fine. If you want to make sweeping statements, go and do some research before you post.

Exactly the same here.
A daily collection, and they will take anything in the bin, next to the bin and will clear up anything that has spilled out or dropped.
They will also chat with people and seem happy to be in work.

The binmen actually have quite a lot of support - it's just that people like me who support them actually have to work for a living and cannot spend all day throwing pathetic insults at each other on online forums.

Oh, and by the way, actually wanting to stand up for yourself against the bosses and fight for some rights at work, rather than just moaning about it in the canteen is not being "trapped in the '70s" - it is you, my friend, who appear to be trapped in the '70s... the 1870s!

Ill try to get this back on track with comments i found in another news item

You want them to work set hours, from what i can tell they are happy to do that as long as all other rules are implemented. If your happy with them spending longer out there doing the same amount of work so be it. Your be paying higher council tax to pay for 100K plus for the increase in diesel costs.

I spoke to some bin men the other day and felt that it was a lot of pressure taken off them working a 37 hour week and following all of the rules that eastleigh implemented. The problem is eastleigh like to turn a blind eye to the rules that do not suit and the current rounds were worked out on that fact, and the current conditions.

Rounds will need to be reassessed with time and motion taking account of all the rules and breaks. Current rounds do not take any of that in to consideration. This will mean more lorries, more workers , more diesel. Costing you the tax payer millions. If that's what you want so be it. Like you said , It wont be my problem it will be yours as an eastleigh tax payer

Your right, i cant handle peoples ignorance and the fact that they have no understanding of the job and the fact that you cant run it on set hours.Like a factory pruduction line . I see a few try to explain it and it goes in one ear and out the other.

Plus if they were that greedy, they would be striking to have the same pay as southampton bin men. Even so i would not call that being greedy, i would call it a normal living wage and then we have you guys moaning if they have second jobs . You treat bin men like dirt and you want them to go out of there way for the likes of you. The irony is southampton have a lot of polish workers and they are on more money than us .
