FIREFIGHTERS rescued a dog from a smoke-logged house near Winchester.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus saved the golden retriever from the smoke at the property in Hurdle Way, Compton early on Saturday afternoon.

They broke into the house which was empty at the time as the householders were out shopping.

The dog, a three year old male, was taken out of the house suffering from smoke inhalation and given a blast of oxygen to clear his lungs Crew manager Kerry Charlton, at Winchester fire station, said: "If the two guys in breathing apparatus had not got him I don't think he would be here today.

"The whole house was smoke-logged and he had inhaled smoke. Dogs have not got big lungs. He was very wobbly.

"The breathing apparatus team got him to the front door and we carried him to the back of a tanker. But once given the oxygen he was alright."

The fire is believed to have started in a wood burner in the lounge.
