SHE is one of Britain's worst motorists, has spent more than £10,000 on driving lessons and failed six tests.

Now Southampton single mum Tara Self has been sent to a ten-day "driving school boot camp" for a new ITV1 documentary airing tonight in a bid to gain her licence.

She will be seen on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as she battled to learn the basics behind the wheel.

Tara, 31, of Vine Road, Shirley Warren, who finally passed her test at the seventh attempt, was desperate to learn to drive so she could take her three children on school runs and days out.

Before she took part in the television programme, called Last Chance Driving School, she had a frantic morning routine, getting up at the crack of dawn every day to get her kids fed, washed and dressed before dashing down the road while pushing her youngest child in a buggy to catch the bus.

Tara said her driving skills had been so poor that one of her previous instructors during the five years she had been taking lessons had lost his temper and verbally assaulted her.

During her first lesson at the residential driving school in Bedfordshire, Tara was filmed cracking under the pressure, hitting the kerb and bursting into tears.

After stopping the car, she said: "I feel like giving up. I want to go home, I don't want to do it any more. I just can't do it, how many lessons have I had and I can't do it?"

Her instructor at the driving school, Neil Beeson, said: "She made a mistake and in her mind it became the biggest mistake ever because it just spiralled out of control to the point where two or three minutes further down the lane we were trying to dab away tears. She let the whole experience get to her.

"If while you're worrying about a little mistake you make a bigger mistake - now that could be the end of the world."

Tara's instructor was replaced by ex-traffic policeman Tim Eden near the end of her ten-day experience. Tim said: "I have told them that I will be tough on them if I have to be. I am not there to be their friend. My objective is black and white: are they safe or are they not safe, are they going to be a danger to other drivers or are they not?"

Tara was among ten of the country's worst motorists taking part in the documentary.

At the end of the ten days, she was one of only two refused permission by the instructors to re-take their test at the end.

The learner drivers were also given personality tests by a psychologist to help them understand more about how they drive, and they underwent computerised brain training to teach their eyes to spot danger.

Last Chance Driving School is on ITV1 at 9pm.
