FIRE has destroyed a Hampshire restaurant just weeks after it appeared on a TV show hosted by foul-mouthed chef Gordon Ramsay.

Fire crews were called to The Granary in Whiteley Lane, Titchfield, shortly before 6.30am today as flames ripped through the Grade II listed building.

About 50 firefighters tackled the blaze, which caused extensive damage to the restaurant's interior.

Steve Pegler, group manager for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Crews commenced firefighting operations on the ground and first floor and worked their way up into the accommodation area, which was unoccupied.

"The fire was bottled up inside the building and conditions were quite severe, but we managed to stop it getting into the roof.

"Fire investigators are at the scene and will be working with the police to ascertain the cause of the blaze."

Just before Christmas The Granary appeared in the Bafta award-winning Channel 4 series Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.

Bosses and staff were forced to eat humble pie as the Michelin-starred chef attempted to help them reverse catastrophic losses of £4,000 a week.

How can you be so cynical?
Granted it may look somwehat suspicious that a place that has well documented "problems" burns down early one morning but let's give some thought for the loss of livelihood here. I'm not just referring to that of the owner but of the staff that have been rendered unemployed by this.
Just try and give some thought before making some less than funny wisecracks eh?!

PS. I've heard there's a good accident on the M27 you may want to go laugh at!!!

As a reply to Dan Owen, the guy who owned it employed barmaids and kitchen staff on the cheap, none of them were highly skilled or specialised at what they did, so please explain your comment? If it was a Gordon Ramsey style high quality restaurant with £50k a year chefs, a decent Front House Manager and professional waiters/waitresses then I would agree with you. The owner deserved everything that happened both on and off camera and if I was him then I would have burnt it down to get a fresh start too.

as i know one of these chefs who just joined i think you should be very carefull what you say, he is now unemployed no wages and has a morgage to pay, by all means have a go at the management but in reality most chefs and frount of house our paid poorly and have been for a long time this is has always been the case. even at high class places only the head chef is paid "£50000" yeah right! his under chefs are sure as hell not. in real life not telly. chefs and waiters are treated so badley its untrue

gordon ramsey is straight down the line and it was great to see him telling that fat boss what was what. Those little blighters would have been a pain in any business, you pay for what you get and they couldnt have been on that much. fair play gordon you are a legend and so truthful it hurts

Gordon - I think you are FAB! :) When you're tired of giving folks the what for in the kitchen, I hope you'll consider becoming a Life Coach! Love your Kitchen Nightmares show, which we get here on BBC America.

Now. As for The Granary -- well, shame, really. I think Gordon left them with a sound, simple, clear plan of action, as he does in every instance. If only people would get there heads out of their backsides and LISTEN! Its a BUSINESS people, not a hobby! And, when you are dealing with FOOD, its people's lives and health we are talking about! I digress...
The Granary. I think there can be very little doubt that the "fire" had, shall we say dubious origins. But, as one person already pointed out here, everyone involved (from the jumped up manager, to the lackadaisical wait staff), everyone deserved a fresh start. They were going nowhere, fast!

Gordon Ramsay simply kicks ****. He is an inspiration to many and if you stop and listen to want he is saying, rather than how he is saying it, you will learn a great deal how to run a successful business. The man would make a great American.

Clearly an insurance job! I guess its just proving it. Looks to me as if the owner even used the kitchen nightmares as part of his plot to gain some money from such a hefty loss.
You have to be blind not to see through it!
Gordon was right about this man!
