SAINTS chief scout John Gorman believes it is "probably the right time" for George Burley to leave the club.
Gorman, who was assistant manager at Saints under Glenn Hoddle, believes Burley will be a successful national boss in Scotland.
"He's very passionate about Scotland and it's an unbelievable opportunity," Gorman said.
"He has such a good name up there and the kind of football and quality of football he plays is clear to see."
Gorman added the SFA had made a good choice picking Burley ahead of Mark McGhee, Graeme Souness and Tommy Burns.
"To be chosen ahead of those, who are all very strong candidates, is a tremendous honour and fully deserved," he said.
"George wanted to do well at Southampton but it's been tough this season for a number of reasons and when your country calls you have to go.
"It's probably the right time for him to go."
