ALRESFORD has been voted the best small market town in Hampshire.

The survey, by the Daily Telegraph, revealed estate agents rated the settlement as one of the UK's top 50 country towns. Arundel, in West Sussex, was top.

The newspaper said towns like Alresford were becoming increasingly desirable', as much for their natural beauty as their shops and schools.

Explaining why the town was so attractive to homebuyers, Alistair Williamson, manager of Keats Marshall Bendall in Alresford, said: "In round terms you have got a traditional Georgian façade town, which offers all the everyday facilities and a great array of independent shops. It's surrounded by some great countryside and it's easy on the eye.''
