Southampton singer gets deal in California

HER crippling arthritis threatened to dash her dreams of stardom but instead led to her being signed to a US record label.

Lin Duffy, 59, of Southampton, had retired from a lifetime in the music industry as a regular on the cabaret and club circuit owing to the painful condition.

Instead she began recording at home as a kind of therapy - and that was when things really began to take off.

Lin is now riding on the crest of a wave after being signed by Californian label D and M Records.

She was signed after her friend and co-songwriter Carol Leech entered her for a competition to have her tracks put on a compilation CD the label was producing.

Once she won a place on the record in October last year she then began producing her own album in November after she got a call from California commissioning the deal.

Since then Lin has gone from strength to strength, sitting at number one of all the record label's artists.

Lin had been in a number of rock bands from the 1970s to the 1990s but was forced to retire from performing cabaret and in local pubs and clubs due to her arthritis.

She has already done a series of radio interviews on the way to promoting her album in America.

She is now hoping to crack both the UK and America, and possibly Australia too.

Lin said: "They offered me a ten to 12 track deal, so I took full advantage and did 12 tracks.

"I like to sing a lot of different genres. If I hear a song I'll give it a bash and I always try to put my own stamp on it.

"When they called me from California I was in total shock. I couldn't believe I'd been chosen to go on the compilation CD, and then to get my own album is fantastic."

Well, I say well done Lin! Great voice too! Nice to see a happy ending story instead of all the horrible stuff we usually see in the papers, like the timewasters & cretins in our society. I have reviewed D and M Records & I would say they look to be destined to be a major independent label with the quality of artists that they are promoting with Lin being one of them! Lets face it, the Americans know how to get the job done! Chance of a lifetime I would say! You go for it Lin!
J.C of Southampton, what exciting things are going on in your life? Sour grapes comes to mind!

If a record deal can cure this illness then we need to make record deals available on the NHS.

On the other hand if she is still receiving disability related benefits she might soon loose them. I'm thinking of that charity cyclist report last week.

Guy had a disibility benefit, went on a sponsored cycle ride (quite a long distance in fact) and had the benefit withdrawn because the Government agency deemed him fit and well so to speak.

Can't find the story on the BBC at the moment.

J.C what is your problem? Quote "she won a place on the record in October last year she then began producing her own album in November after she got a call from California commissioning the deal." Where does it say this lady made any payment? Very Lucky Lady & good luck to her. If your turn ever comes for something nice in your life, hope people are pleased for you too like you are for her! You get back in this life what you give out mate! I will put your name forward for the Billboard critics award, such talent in your review that has no substance or facts!

As you know some people never get a break in their music carers you only have to look at the X factor (what a fix) to see there is loads of talent out there that will never get the chance to release an album or follow there dreams

I have know Lin a number of years now and am totally gutted that this plonker of a journalist has decided to pick up on the negative points but missed so many positive about her life and achievements to date. Lin has worked so hard to get where she is today she has entertained many people from all over the south of England and is also a fabulous person!

Lin dissevered to win the competition that was being run by D&M and her album is doing very well over in America how many people can say they have released and album? Have you even checked out her music?

To the journalist who wrote this pathetic article I hope your no thinking of staying in this profession because you certainly do not have an ear for detail maybe you would be suited to writing the obituaries.

Do not underestimate the talent of Lin Duffy come along tomorrow 16th to Weasels Records in Shirley at 2pm and check out the album for yourself she has got where she is today through sheer determination and hard work! If you cant show support for a local lady who is following her dreams please don’t bother with the nasty comments Lin yes had a disability but what has this got to do with her singing?

To all those people who left nasty comments what do you do in your spare time go and poke fun at people in wheel chairs?

Don’t worry Lin your fans are behind you 100%

Loads of love and cant wait to get the album see you tomorrow xx

I agree with adrian. As a tax payer, we pay for people like this woman to indulge in a bedroom hobby, instead of sitting in a bedroom writing songs feeding her ego, she could sit in an office and earn her wages to pay for her hobby instead of relying on benefits to fund it!
Born and bred in Southampton, and an avid "gig goer" I have been supporting local artists for many years, covering all the major venues in southampton and surrounding areas, and I have to say, I,ve never seen this woman on the circuit! I heard a couple of tracks from the album, maybe she should put her energy into writing a C.V instead of songs! Bob

bob your a missarable sh*t head dont start bleating on about "im a tax payer and shes on benifits" do you know this for sure?

do you know where your taxes are really going?.......... housing peodofiles paying for peoples stay in HM prisons fighting wars that arent even ours? single mothers with 15 kids alcoholics who will cost the NHS thousands before they kill themselves community beat officers to protect old folk in their own communities from mindles thugs who whould kill an OAP for a fiver? no mention of your taxes there!

lin is a disabled lady who has talent she takes nothing from anyone and gives loads back! so before you start with your pointless comments think

havent seen her on the circuit maybe that would be because she has a disability is it not discrimination not to let this talented wonam have her crack at her dream? oh and i have seen her at gigs across the south and she rocks as for her ego hun its people like you who break her ego and dreams daily lin was in the navy and served for people like you and me and her countryand has payed her taxes have you not thought shes just retired?

we love you lin XX
