Residents today told how they were at the centre of a rescue drama when a fireball swept through their block of flats in Southampton.

Firefighters rescued 23 people from the flats in Wimpson Lane, Millbrook.

No one was hurt in the incident but 12-month-old baby Lee Dawson was taken to hospital for a check-up.

His dad Aaron Dawson, 26, an electrician, told how he woke up to the sound of screams and smoke alarms at around 2.30am.

He said: "I opened the front door and the smoke was very thick.

"I probably would have been able to make my escape if I had been on my own but I knew I wouldn't be able to manage with my 12-month-old son Lee.

"The firefighters told me to wait in my flat and just keep the bedroom window open.

"About half an hour later they came to rescue us.

"It hit me a couple of times that we might not escape but luckily we did."

It started when a fireball was sent through the building when the fuel tank of a motorbike stored in a bin shed at the back of the block ruptured.

Baby Lee, who suffers from asthma, was taken to Southampton General Hospital by Aaron and his girlfriend Karmel Smith, 21, where he was given the all-clear.

Another resident, mum-of-three Sarah Murphy, 23, told of the moment she was confronted by a wall of smoke as she tried to escape.

Sarah, whose children were staying with their grandmother overnight, said: "I was lying awake in my bed when I saw some blue flashing lights through the window.

"I looked out and saw it was the fire engine and opened my front door where I was met with big thick black smoke.

"I have never seen anything like it before and closed the door before going on to the balcony where firefighters rescued me and my partner."

they may not have been with their mother, which was probably a good thing. it could've been another 3 children being taken to hospital.

Probably because of the amount of people involved. You try dealing with 23 panicking people at 2.30 in the morning. All hands to the pumps ('scuse the pun)

ahem excuse me sarah murphy is a great mum and so what if she has 3 kids aged 23? at least she is young enough to run around after them and keep them occupied and actually raise them herself instead of waiting a few more years then palming them off on a childminder! and before anyone starts the kids go to her mums because her mum likes to have them there! anyway its a good job they werent there at the time as they may have ended up in hospital thismorning!

A rare piece of decent spelling from a chav. So I assume if she looks after them that she does not work, I am glad my taxes are being put to such a good use.

Nice of the firemen to put themselves out!!! (think about it).
Maybe they were not available at Redbridge because they were playing pool, or doing some moonlighting down the taxi rank.

The fire brigade arrived within 10 mins of Mr Croucher ringing them after he had investigated the situation for himself, he showed them where the fire was provided infromation on how many people in each flat, this enabled the fire brigade to evacate the block before the situation got any worse.
Thanks to the quick thinking from Mr Croucher my daughter and grandchildren were brought to safety.

Gemma, why haven't you rushed to your friend's defence to tell us that her husband supports these kids by working.

If you can't say so (truthfully), we'll all know that she is sponging on taxpayers.

Redbridge firefighters would have attended in greater numbers if they hadn't been reduced in numbers a short while ago when it was decided to have a pick-up truck (c/w small water tank & pump) to deal with the numrous rubbish fires in the area.
You had the chance to disagree with that but probably didn't because "it didn't affect you". Now you need St. Mary's to attend serious incident such as this, with Redbridge as back-up when it should have been the other way around!

Get your facts right first it was not the bins that caught fire as the bins are kept out side and it was inside the shed area that caught fire. And i have a job which i finished at midnight that night which is lucky coz if i was on a early i would have been in bed and not smelt the smoke to raise the alarm and it could of been worse then what i was

SELF INFLICTED, you got no idea what we were all put through, me and my husband work full time and support our family, my children had nightmares last night and i couldnt sleep thinking about what could of happened. i dont like people that live off my taxes but no body deserves to be put in that situation because of a stupid women.
if you every have to be rescured in these circumstances then feel free to add a comment until then dont judge people you dont know.
