Labour MPs slammed over Post Office closures.

Alan Whitehead and John Denham today face accusations of hypocrisy for having campaigned to save post offices in the city whilst voting last night for closures.

They voted with the Government to narrowly defeat a Tory motion to halt a programme which will axe up to 2,500 branches across the UK - including 62 in Hampshire.

At least 20 Labour MPs rebelled to support the motion along with the Lib Dems.

Conservative parliamentary candidate for Test Jeremy Moulton said: "Our MPs are not standing up for the city. Once again when it comes to the crunch they are simply Gordon Brown's voice in Southampton."

He added: "Local communities in Southampton will be hit hard by these closures which will be very damaging and disruptive, particularly for elderly people."

Mr Whitehead, Test MP, complained about the post office review which proposed closing four branches in his constituency.

He said his objections "specifically related to the issue of the consultation".

He claimed the Conservatives had failed to commit to investing any extra money in the network and pointed out that the former Tory-led Southampton City Council had voted against exploring the option of the council stepping in to support some branches.

Itchen MP Mr Denham, Cabinet minister for skills, campaigned against the closure of the branch in Oaktree Road, Bitterne Park.

Mr Denham said: "It's quite possible to support overall Government policy of capping the taxpayers' subsidy to post offices, and putting more money in, while not agreeing with the way the Post Office takes every single decision."

"If I had said I'm opposed to all post offices closing on principle then I would be criticised - but I haven't opposed all of the closures."

Tory Itchen candidate Royston Smith said: "It's time John Denham put his constituents first. They don't want him campaigning outside their local Post Offices one minute and voting with the government to close them the next."

Lib Dem MP for Eastleigh Chris Huhne said Mr Denham should have resigned from his Government post to oppose the post office closures in the same way as he did over the Iraq war.

Mr Smith backed the call: "If Mr Denham had an ounce of integrity he would have supported his constituents and backed Conservative calls for the closures to be re-assessed. "Once again, we have the Government's man in Southampton, rather than Southampton's man in Government."

Conservatives want a full revaluation of the closure programme to see where more business can be put into the post office network. It might involve working with Royal Mail or local councils.

They accuse the Government for managing the decline of the post offices rather than building the network up.

post office closures happen, what do people think PO's losing money is okay because they need to buy stamps once a year. Its a business not a charity, oh forgot this is England people love drinking from the public troth as long as someone else is paying!!

Considering Southampton Council is now in the hands of NuLabour, will they do what Alan Whitehead had suggested to the Tories?

NuLabour used to make enough noises in Coxford over post office and shop in Aldermoor Road. In fact they misled us by promising that they will get somebody to reopen that post office. Can anybody now explain their progress on that matter?

NuLabour's candidate on Coxford has now delivered leaflets claiming all kinds of credits for various improvements in the area can he provide documentary evidence to back his claims i.e correspondence with Council regarding these matters and also tell us why his party is not saying anything on Aldermoor Road Post Office anymore? Considering till recently they were not in power how could their candidate claim the credit for services provided by others?

Wills that is unfair. Both Alan and John are highly qualified and had other jobs before becoming MPs.

We may not like what they have done, but if we start throwing untrue mud around we could also be accused of hypocrisy.

The post offices are closing because they are unprofitable. They are unprofitable because the Government has 'redistributed' services previously provided by The Post Office. There was an element of cross-subsidy which enabled The Post Office to keep unprofitable post offices open to help the social cohesion of communities. No profits=no cross-subsidies=clos
ures.
Now,the EUSSR will not allow ANY British Government to subsidise post offices after 2010 and so The Post Office has little choice but to close unprofitable branches.

how typical for the Tories to pitch up and whine about a situation after the event and talk only abotu someon elses actions. Where were they last year when the consultation was gtoing on, how many leaflets did they put out or how many petitions did they organise? I agree that it is hypocritical for Labour to cmaaing on something lcoally and then vote for it nationally, but no more hypocritical than local tories complaining about the money they get from government and then Tories in Westminster not voting or not turning up to the debate on the saem issues.

Both Jeremy Moulton and Royston Smith were in teh Cabinet at the time this consultation happened, they could have stepped in to support our post offices with Council MOney.

Note how they are not even talking really about the Post Offices now, just about the MP's they are both trying to unseat. This pretending to care about issues so you cna swipe at other people makes me sick to my stomach!

Dear Parmjit,

I have looked up the past work history of both MPs and I stand by my comments, I also looked up voting records in the house : I note Denham did not vote on transparency in government ! Then why would he .

I seem to remember the Tories closed about 4000 post ofices when they were in power during the 80s and 90s.
Tory MPs in the constituencies where they closed, protested against the closures. No different to what Labour MPs are doing now.

Its typical Tory whingeing.

For example they (thats you Neil!!) moan about Labour and the Liberals keeping the Tories out in Southampton City Council but are quite happy to ally with the Liberals themselves in councils such as Birmingham and Brent to name but a few.

Southampton Conservatives offer nothing new to local politics.

How difficult can this be?

John denham didn't back the city over government grant because he is part of the government. He hasn't supported local people over post office closures because he IS the governemnet. People need to decide what they want from their politicians. Someone on the telly or someone in their corner. Denham is on the telly.

I am not surprised John Denham and Alan Whitehead acted in the manner they did in voting for the closure of Post Offices. Like all politicians they are interested only in furthering only their own career. It is up to we the electorate to make sure they are not re-elected at the next election. It is we the electorate should take the blame if they are re-elected.

Thanks Wills.

I am not surprised at the voting record of John. I have no intention of making excuses for his or Alan's voting record, it is up to them and their local party to explain what is going on.
But as far as John and Alan's ability and desire to work is concerned both of them are not work shy and have never been professional unemployed. Both are well educated and had respectable jobs before becoming MPs.
I think as local MPs they are good at helping people, I will never hesitate approaching them for help if I had any problem.
Like you and many others I am not at all happy on the parliamentary voting record of both. Especially recently over EU when they did not honour their manifesto committment and now what they have done over post office.
People in public life should say what they mean and mean what they say. When they do the opposite it only harms the democratic system.

How many times do the public need to be made aware of the real situation regarding the post office closures? I have written many times to the paper explaining it is the FAULT OF THE EU, see directive 67/97 were it is explained in detail. We are no longer able to make these decisions about our postal service because the most lucrative areas ( IE business mail )has been sold off to foreign companies, Germany is one of the biggest buyers, while many other foreign companies have been gainfully employed cherry picking whats left!Until we get out of this unholy union the situation will get worse ,the post office is just one of the many public services that have been swallowed up by the EU and its daily deluge of directives . As to the councils taking over the running of the post office God forbid they should be allowed any where near it, They make a big enough mess of our finances as it is ,and of course if they were to take it over you would then see another massive hike in your council tax to pay for yet another shoddy service!

The government has demanded money from The Post Office for a number of years now, under tory and labour. Apparently the PO ceased being a public service when thatcher's government were in power and was seen as a business which paid money to the government. This is why the PO is in such a bad state.
