THERE can be no doubt that an inquiry into the Iraq war is long overdue.
Some Conservatives opposed the illegal war at the time - Kenneth Clark for one whilst Geoffrey Howe laid down four conditions which were never met. Michael Ancram, the former shadow foreign secretary, in advocating the withdrawal of British troops wrote (New Statesman June 11 07)," They have been heroes. They have done everything that has been asked of them, and more. It is the politicians - and I admit that originally I was one - who got it wrong." These Conservatives can call for the inquiry with a clear conscience.
This is not the case for the majority of Tory MPs who were its cheerleaders and who are now guilty of political opportunism.
The Tory and Labour MPs who voted for it should apologise.
If Michael Ancram, a former conservative foreign affairs expert, is big enough to confess his error over Iraq, can we expect an apology from New Forest East MP Julian Lewis?
