THE story of a Second World War veteran's search for a drinking buddy has touched the hearts of Daily Echo readers.

Sadly the experiences of Jack Hammond, 88, of Cadnam, pictured, are not unique and many elderly people are left feeling isolated and alone.

However, this may be set to change as Hampshire County Council is funding an 18-month pilot scheme which will see workers meeting up with the elderly to make sure they do not lose touch with the community.

The Daily Echo revealed last week how Jack's son Michael became so desperate to find his dad a companion for trips to the pub, that he placed a 25p advert in the local post office offering prospective drinking partners £7-anhour plus expenses.

A dozen potential candidates have come forward so far.
