ARMED with buckets rather than bows and arrows, Robin Hood and his Merry Men hijacked Southampton's Itchen Bridge to raise thousands of pounds for two Hampshire charities.

Members of Hedge End Breakfast Rotary Club stormed the tollbooths at theWoolston end of the bridge, demanding donations from motorists and pedestrians.

The effort proved successful, with the team raising more than £3,500 for the Hampshire Air Ambulance and Hampshire Lifelong Learning.

Club spokesman Andrew Kowalski said: "The event was successful and on behalf of the club I would like to thank all the motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who donated."

Keith Millman, the director general for Rotary in the south of England, gives a helping hand, assisted by Linda Gaunt and John Stranger.
