TWO Southampton mums are hoping to promote and celebrate breastfeeding with a city-wide art competition.

Denise Van De Griend and Nicola New are organising the competition where mums, dads and children can all take part.

They are encouraging anyone who has had an experience of breastfeeding to create a work of art that represents it.

The entries will then be judged and displayed at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton to coincide with Breastfeeding Awareness Week between May 11 and 16. There are also plans to move the display around the city to different locations.

Denise said: "The art can be made out of anything: sculpture, paintings - even a cake - as long as it represents what breastfeeding means to you. It is open to all members of the family, anyone who has had an experience of breastfeeding.

"We hope to break down some of the stigmas attached to showing breasts, through works of art."

Winners will be announced at a special event at the maternity unit that will coincide with the start of the awareness week.

Entries can be submitted to the Hardmoor Early Years Centre at Leaside Way, Southampton or, if in a pdf format, can be e-mailed to sian.davies@dailyecho.co.uk.

Entries must be received by April 25.
