CONTROVERSIAL plans to add flouride to Southampton's water supply have been condemned by a green MEP.

Just weeks after Prime Minister Gordon Brown insisted water fluoridation would benefit the city's residents, Green MEP Dr Caroline Lucas, pictured above right, paid a personal visit to health chiefs to condemn the proposals.

In February Health Secretary Alan Johnson pledged an extra £14m for health authorities that want to add fluoride to their water supplies to boost dental health and the Prime Minister said he had "seen the benefits of fluoridation".

Dr Lucas has demanded the proposals to add the chemical to Southampton's water be dropped.

She said: "Water fluoridation has simply not been proven to be effective for teeth, particularly when the bad effects of dental fluorosis are taken into account.

"Furthermore, many studies have indicated links between water fluoridation and serious ill-health effects, including thyroid problems, skeletal fluorosis, bone cancers and mental problems.

"Finally, putting fluoride in our water amounts to mass medication of the population.

"This directly contravenes the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine, and is contrary to medical ethics.

"We are seeking a legal opinion on its further contravention of the Medicines Directive."

Dr Lucas delivered a letter to bosses at the South Central Strategic Health Authority (SHA) urging them to dismiss fluoridation.

A campaign group has already been set up to fight fluoridation.

Southampton City Primary Care Trust (PCT) is supporting the move The SHA is carrying out a feasibility study into the practicalities of adding extra fluoride and is due to report back to the PCT this summer.

If it gives fluoridation the thumbs-up there will be a public consultation.

This plan to mass medicate the public needs to be tested in Court once and for all.

Perhaps it would be best if the SHA went ahead with its plans, without a public consultation which just wastes more time and money.

I for one don't want the water messed with any more - leave it alone and don't poison the population.

Suppose they prove in ten years time that this fluoride causes health problems... does this mean everyone who gets ill can sue the government?

My teeth are perfectly healthy and i go to a dentist regularly... If people need better dental treatment, maybe the government should change NHS policy on dental treatment! Don't just poison the population!!

The current science shows any benefit form fluoride is topical(like toothpaste) and the Dental fluorosis tooth damage is from ingestion as in water fluoridation. The majority of recent studies show very small if any benefit from fluoridation and delayed eruption can give false results. Rising dental fluorosis cost exceeds any benefit claimed in most countries. Many countries are now lowering to 0.6ppm instead of just stopping a policy based on misinformation. The big issue should be cumulative toxic damage as about about half or more of all fluoride stores in your bones and tissues forever just like lead but more toxic. Brush do not swallow if you want fluoride. It is only common sense and what the new science says.

We are fighting water fluoridation in Geelong, Australia at the moment. We just had a so called public consultation and the Government said that fluoridation will go ahead even though a majority of citizens do NOT want this poison in their water supply.

My advice to all of you is to take it to court as soon as possible because after the feasability study, which will end up in favour of fluoridation due to corruption in the government, they will announce fluoridation very quickly.

Start fighting now. Get a huge group of citizens together and don't let them poison your water. Get on to Prof Paul Connett's website www.fluorideAction.n
et and find out what is going on around the world regarding water fluoridation.

Water is for everyone, fluoridation is NOT!

Good Luck, don't give up fighting for you rights for safe drinking water.

Cheers

We need to take up this issue in Melbourne also. They add a whole range of things to the water here, but fail to listen to the evidence at hand. If people want medication then they can choose to take a tablet, but we should at least have the choice!

Iodine is added to salt to prevent goitre, and chlorine is added to water to prevent a range of diseases. These health measures are not regarded as mass medication.
Fluorine is an element in the same group (halides) and its controlled addition to the water supply will be an added duty by a responsible society for the health of its members. The greatest health benefit will be for the least fortunate within our society and so the fluoridation of water supplies should be applauded by all who care for the least fortunate in our society..

Lets get real about this misguided idea to put another chemical in our water supply. The government has offered £14m to get it started. Now tell me any council willing to refuse the chance of free MONEY.

Official statements from South Central SHA, the PCT and doctors Mortimore and Cockroft that dental fluorosis is harmless and fluoridation is completely safe must be immediately and publicly withdrawn.

In 1999, Earl Baldwin of Bewdley asked Her Majesty's Government:

"In view of the absence of any relevant scientific studies cited in the US Review of Fluoride, 1991, referred to in the Written Answer by Baroness Hayman on 8 February (WA 1-2), whether they can quote any other scientific sources in support of their belief that dental fluorosis is only a cosmetic side-effect of fluoride and not an indication of early toxicity."

Baroness Hayman responded, in a Written Answer, for the Government: "We accept that dental fluorosis is a manifestation of systemic toxicity. . " - (Hansard, 20 Apr 1999 : WA 158.).
It is estimated that, as in Ireland, 48% - 54% of children living in fluoridated areas develop dental fluorosis, which dentists refuse to treat on the NHS.
