A Bangladesh national appeared in court today charged with the murder of a woman found in a suitcase on the outskirts of a Hampshire village.

Ziaul Haque, 27, of Drummond Street, Camden Town, north London, appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court accused of the murder of 26-year-old Sylwia Sobczak of Mafeking Road Tottenham, north London.

The burnt body of Ms Sobczak was found in the case by a dog walker on a bridleway half a mile from the centre of Dummer on May 8.

The village near Basingstoke is home to the families of the Duchess of York and socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.

Police were initially unable to identify the body and made a nationwide appeal.

Haque, who has lived in Britain for five years, was remanded in custody during the brief hearing to appear again at Winchester Crown Court on May 30.

There was no application for bail.
