Police get armoured car to help tackle crime

IT is the first vehicle of its kind to be used by a police force in the UK.

Constructed using some of the world's most advanced technology it can withstand gunfire, grenades and bomb blasts.

Now Hampshire police has unveiled a £120,000 armoured Land Rover as its latest tool in the fight against crime.

The four-tonne vehicle will replace the force's outdated current armoured car, which was bought on the recommendation of the Home Office following the Hungerford shootings in August 1987.

The new car will be used for armed incidents such as sieges, counter-terrorism and detaining violent criminals across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Roger Medwell, chief executive of NP Aerospace, which helped develop the vehicle alongside British defence giants Qinetiq and Hampshire Constabulary, said: "This is possibly the most advanced vehicle we have ever produced. It's made of the strongest material known to man - Dyneema.

"It will stop all the threats you are likely to get in the UK and is extremely good against bomb blasts. If there was a bomb blast this is the vehicle you would want to be in as it actually absorbs the energy of the blast.

"We have been working with the Army for 30 years and built the armoured vehicles used in Northern Ireland. No army in the world has this sort of advanced technology."

Steve Watts, assistant chief constable for specialist operations, said: "It's a real first for Hampshire and as far as I know it's the first vehicle of its type in the country."

The car was dispatched to the Isle of Wight for its first operation but police refused to comment on the nature of the incident.

This is proof we now have a para-military police force. The sort of thing we would look over the Channel at and laugh at in the 70's.

No doubt the boys in blue will use this to gun down members of the public from the safety of their own armour plating.

Dodge City just go more technically advanced.

Yes Fred, Clearly the boys in blue are now paramilitary especially since this is replacing a vehicle that the police have had since 1987, to protect people from disasters such as hungerford. Muppet.

Joking aside, are we saying that the risks in Hampshire are so significant that the purchase of such a vehicle is justified. And are we seriously saying that the risks that justify the purchase of such a vehicle are significantly greater than Liverpool, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bradford and Nottingham (many of which have a history of terrorism and gun crime.

I am not aware of too many rocket attacks or grenade explosions recently....

I may be cynical, but it comes across as "big boys toys" rather than fully representative of value for money for the taxpayers who are funding it. It might however help to explain the high rate precept for the Police...

And given the size of Hampshire, how can a Landrover, a very heavy one at that, (and a vehicle that is hardly noted for it's high speed), respond to incidents across the county in a timely fashion.

Sorry, I just don't get it!

Professor Lee-Gate's comments are, of course, very valid. Perhaps he should be asked to assist the Hampshire Police Authority; they have much to learn and even more to save

I bet you'll be the first to moan if an incident did take place and we never had the resources to cope?
In this so called 'modern' world things like this are needed to tackle rising crime. I just hope the windscreen is hard to see through when it runs over the Millbrook and Thornhill lot!

So one beefed up Land Rover is the answer to all our problems, is it?

I take your point, though, about Millbrook & Thornhill.

Given a choice, I would far rather see vehicles like this deployed in Afghanistan or Iraq where our loved ones are facing danger every day, with large numbers being killed. At least then I could reconcile myself to money weel spent. And our soldiers are crying out for equipment like this..
But then our soldiers are often not payed as much as traffic wardens.., and there is a risk these vehicles would be damaged by those nasty rockets, roadside bombs, bullets and grenades.....we must after all protect our pretty little policemen...

Oh I see it protects us from another Hunderford. Shame they didn't have one in Scotland on 13/03/1996. I thought disarming the public prevented another Hungerford?

In fact the best way to prevent another Hungerford or Dunblane is to allow ordinary members of the public to be armed.

I bet this story goes down with our troops out in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Latest news of the young female soldier blown to pieces with her mates when travelling in inadequate 'snatch' vehicles.

Why cant we follow our European forces and use water cannons and dye guns on the feral scum that pollute our streets?

Get blasting away at rowdy footy matches or down any High St on the weekend orgy of drinking, puking, fighting, urinating etc?

Other countries tend to have much less trouble as they are afraid of the heavy handed cops. A healthy respect methinks. It works

Maybe £120k is a lot to spend.. but a Landrover Defender currently costs about £40k anyway.

Do you really think our 'boys' in Afghanistan would appreciate this?? Its exactly the same as a Snatch which is causing all the problems when they drive over mines anyway...

It was probably an old RUC type Snatch, that Hants had before anyway.

Its got armour .. sorry Dyneema http://en.wikipedia.
