Police siege was only man eating fish and chips

IT all blew up as a man was tucking into his fish and chip supper - but it was enough to trigger off a response from Hampshire police's armed units.

An address in Gosport was at the centre of a teatime drama following reports of a domestic incident involving a knife.

But officers soon found out the weapon in question was the man's teatime cutlery.

Police attended the top floor flat in Forton Road on Tuesday at 6.20pm.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: "The report was of a potential domestic incident and, acting on the information received, police responded with an armed response vehicle as there was an indication a knife was involved.

"But it quickly transpired no knife or other offensive weapon was involved - the gentleman was simply eating his fish and chips with a knife and fork."

Police remained on the scene for about three hours ensuring the reported domestic incident was over.

The spokesman added: "A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault but, once he arrived at the police station, he was promptly released with no charge because no offence had been committed.

"Nobody was in danger at any point and no threats were made with a knife."
