Multi-million pound upgrade on city High Street

8:38am Friday 4th July 2008

comment Comments (47)   Have your say »

PLANS have been unveiled to revamp Southampton's High Street next month as part of a £6m project to connect a series of roads from the city centre to the waterfront.

The works, costing more than £1m, will repave the busy street, widen the pavements, plant new trees as well as adding street furniture and new lighting.

The council claims the works, part of the so-called "north-south spine project", will "radically enhance the area"

and will be a "boost for businesses as well as shoppers".

Cabinet member for environment and transport Councillor Gavin Dick said: "These works are essential for the High Street. After they are completed the area will be much safer for pedestrians and vehicles."

The works are expected to last for ten months, during which the High Street will be made one way.

A public exhibition is being held at the Dolphin Hotel in High Street today.

Street furniture jsut encourages all day drinking and smoking. There are always drunks in the area. The atmosphere in London Road is horrendous. Some days, there are fights and then you have to walk through the cigarette smoke. One is also attacked by bullies on bikes. It is not pleasant to walk in to Southampton along this route. I now use the bus hardly leading to a healthy lifestyle.

To be fair, the fact that you have to walk through cigarette smoke is because people like you complained that you wanted all smokers out of buildings. You can't then complain when they smoke outside.

of course we can. Smokers are a blight and should be locked away if they can't stop their filthy habit.

So, what they are going to do is to re-open all the roads that they closed off to traffic to make pedestian areas, then widen the payments... though I am muchly delighted to be aloowed to ride my bike down through the percinct without some pedestrian shouting at me to dismount, I am concerned at the cost to the public of undoing all the pedestrianised areas of the high street.

Smoking should be banned in all public places indoors and out. If people want to smoke they should do so in private and not inflict their poison on those of us that value our lives.

It is so easy to moan for the sake of it - I do the same, but I feel it is time to support such schemes. Where I lived small sapling trees and shrubs were planted and kids were hell bent on destroying them. However, 20 years on those trees are tall, beautiful and is an asset to the neighbourhood. The seats were vandalised but now assist people in their shopping, having a rest and chatting - this is with a community one has to live with the rough and the smooth. Have patience - it is better to have a go at improving poor old sad Southampton - lets give them a chance.

Widening the pavements ? Presumably by narrowing the roads, so how does that make it safer ? I suppose they'll get rid of roadside parking....

Also, what about the other £5M in the £6M scheme, presumably this will be to build a load of flats in dirty great tower blocks ?

The toxicity of cigarette smoke pales into insignificance when compared to that of all the cars and other vehicles pootling about the place

I'm not a fan of smokers, either. But I am a fan of personal freedom. Today it's smokers, tomorrow it'll be drinkers who are the Big New Social Lepers. You can be sure of that. The nanny state is determined to turn us all into good little citizen-voters

Yeh I know you're not having a go!

Being hidden behind the Internet allows people to take the gloves off and say things to each other they wouldn't say face-to-face (yes, even those of you who claim otherwise, mostly) and since you rarely see forums dedicated to slagging off council residents, for example, the next best thing is to nail it onto the end of a tangentially-related story I guess. And some people just like stirring things up a bit, see how people react

The chairs and benches on the High Street are ace, I always go and have sit down for a sandwich and a chat and a smoke (oh no!!). You can't drink on the High Street anyway, it's one of those new-fangled Controlled Zones. I can't ever remember being attacked by bikers on London Road... Are you sure you weren't watching Mad Max?

If you want to be such an extremist, then your all in favour of banning cars lorries etc. Their pollutants kill more people than passive smoking ever will.

I am sure tho you only want to ban the things that don't involve you, when its something that does its another matter. So get of your high horse and give it a rest telling people what they can and can not do.

When is the council going to realise that what southampton really needs is a public transportation system that connects all the main parts of southampton! My suggestion would be a mono rail type that could be raised above ground to reduce the traffic congestion that is only going to get worse from Ocean Village to the station!
The longer time goes on the more disruption it will cause to put in!

well if you have not heard of a monorail before...have a look at this site http://www.lvmonorai

Las Vegas and Sydney are 2 cities that have a monorail...they are often used a theme parks for convenience...but as you will see in the link above they are very economical and environmentally friendly!

Buses are rubbish...they use up space on the roads so add to congestion and pollution. This is the 21st Century when are we going to start being ambitious with transport systems that will be able to move people around much quicker and efficiently than vehicles on the road?!
Southampton wants a wow factor just think of the added tourism and advertising it could generate and they are not very loud like trains.

allsaintsnocurves, southampton says...

well obviously there's not a chance that's why Southampton continues to just build traffic lights, flats, offices and more shops without considering the future implications. There's no forward thinking it's about using spending the budget while it's there.
I thought the Millbrook roundabout was getting a nice new road surface after all the road works but to my amazement all this trouble is due to them putting in completely useless traffic lights to go with the ones they put at the end of the M271/M27 slip road!! Crazy...
Southampton will just be known in 5 years time for traffic jams...rising polution due to this and shops...something to be truly proud of!
