Landlady’s Meat Loaf challenge to perform in her pub garden

A PUB landlady has challenged US star Meat Loaf to prove that he can still rock - by performing a special gig in her garden.

Jacqui Clapp has offered to stage a show at the Red Lion in Totton so that the ageing rocker can win back the hordes of fans left disappointed by his recent show at Romsey's Broadlands House.

Many of the 10,000-strong audience left the £37.50 gig early, complaining of poor sound quality and a lacklustre performance from the 60-year-old Texan, best known for hits Bat out of Hell and Dead Ringer for Love.

Shows in Bath and Nottingham - part of the Case de Carne tour - have also hit sour notes with fans.

Jacqui now plans to turn her pub garden into a mini arena featuring a top-notch sound system, two 40ft stage trucks and enough room for 4,000 fans.

The 42-year-old said: "I'm putting a challenge to Meat Loaf - come back and show us all that you can still rock.

"So many people were left bitterly disappointed by the Broadlands gig and it was painful to see such a poor performance by a real rock legend.

"It would mean so much if Meat Loaf were to come back and play to his fans and prove us all wrong by showing us how good he really is.

"He could come and play a show at the end of the summer after the tour is finished and before he flies back to the States.

"If he did that, all would be forgiven."

Devoted fan Jacqui added: "Although this is about putting on a show for everyone, it's also massively personal.

"My teenage years were spent singing along to Bat out of Hell, and I can still recite every word of every song.

"I never got to see him play back then, and seeing him live was on my list of things to do.

"When I finally got to see him it was such a huge disappointment and I was left feeling gutted, as were many fans.

"He needs to do something to convince us he still has it."

David Cox, Meat Loaf's publicist, was unavailable for comment.

Meat Loaf is due to play shows in York tonight and Norwich on Sunday.

Shameless self-promotion. Meat Loaf won't play, especially after the constant complaining from Jax and her fellow whiners over the last few days.

Why am I still reading these stories?

If he could fill a 10,000 person venue once, he could do it again - why would he go to some pub's beer garden? Just because the sound quality wasn't great at his last gig (according to these reports) it does't mean his fan base has gone or he has lost it himself.

Talk about trying to gain yourself some publicty...i'm not from the area but from what people are saying above you want a star like meat loaf to come play in the red lion - which opinions above call it "a dump" which if that is true than that says a lot...i think you're just trying to latch on to a story which isn't even news worthy in the first place to gain yourself publicity....you're trying to make a a name for yourself. Good luck to you, nothing personal i don't know you or i have never been in your bar so i cannot comment (i'm only going on what peple above me are saying about it) Wouldn't you make so much money though if he played in your pub, on drink alone.hmmmm

yeah jacqui, if he made you a lot of money and drew a lot of attention to your pub you would forgive him - you're out to make money out of this you don't care how good or bad Meat Loaf is at all. Good stunt though so credit for that - Meat loaf has his fans to stress how good he is, he doesn't need journalists like Hampshire have or opportunists like yourself

For those doubting the show, have you actually read the comments on it from his fan club and his official site - full of praise! They are the people who matter not opportunists and information-starved journalists.

I saw a gig in the Red Lion last week, it was shocking, i demand my money back, also the beer was warm, the decor was tacky and the bar staff ingnorant.

I demand compensation, i will not rest, im very sad.

Would all you Meatloaf fans go on you tube and see the video of Meatloaf at Nottingham last week. Then see that it was not only Broadlands he could not sing at. There seems to be a growing trend in how bad he can sing. Prehaps he is trying to sing bad so he doesn't have to anymore concerts, just a shame that we were not told before we all spent £37.50 plus booking fees per ticket. My ears can't take this meatloaf cat sining anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw U2 at the Red Lion last year, and there was plenty of room in the Beer Garden. They were playing on the back of a lorry, just like their very first gig, they did in Dublin.

so do we really want meat loaf playing a gig in totton, as a resident that lives near the red lion it would be a nightmare, where would these 4000 people park can you imagine the traffic. i dont think you could fit that many people in the garden, any way its just a ploy to get people to the pub its a dive been their once had a meal that was cold and warm beer i dont think meat would enjoy that oh no!

This story should be removed from all web sites. Will Carson and Jaqui Clapp should be ashamed of themselves for a cheap publicity stunt and a very bad piece of reporting.

I disagree

There is no such thing as 'bad' publicity. If I ran a pub or any commercial enterprise then I would do anything to raise the profile.

It's all par tof marketing and PR so stop whinging. At least it provides some light relief from the doom and gloom across the news stories

as a local to totton i am aware of the reputation of the Red Lion and its owners and its disgraceful treatment towards local businesses. They are well known for using local businesses and not making payment, it is scandalous that the landlady is portraying herself as a community saviour for a big act like meat loaf ,when she clearly isn't and she does not give two hoots to the community its just a cheap stunt for a cheap pub with a well thought out free bit of advertising for the pub.. shrewd eh!

This daft bint has got to be having a laugh.
Asking Meat Loaf to play a beer garden?
Why not ask Jon Bon Jovi to serve beer, and Steve Tyler to clean the bogs while we're at it?

Sad cow is looking for attention and free publicity anyway she can, and this rag has fell for it and given her exposure.

If she's such a big fan, can I ask what her user name is on the Meat Loaf fan forums?

She'd be lucky to hire a Meat Loaf tribute.

As we were recently playing 2 shows in Bognor we decided to visit the lovely jackie , we had a great meal there and we could understand the frustration that she and hundreds of others felt .
As Meat has declined Jackies offer we thought why not give Southampton a night to remember! And show them the UKS NO1 Meat Loaf tribute ..... To Hell And Back www.meatloaf.org We are pleased that Jackie has booked our show for Friday 26th September , tickets are 5-00 we are sure this will be a great success and give Jackie and the area a night to remember
