Meat Loaf: 'I'm sorry'

ROMSEY: American rock star takes the blame for poor sound quality ROCK star Meat Loaf has apologised for his controversial Hamp-shire gig which left hundreds of fans calling for refunds.

Many of the 10,000-strong crowd walked out of Broadlands in Romsey early after the concert was plagued with poor weather and sound problems.

Yesterday the 60-year-old Texan rocker said he was "extremely upset" and "extremely sorry" for the show, for which he said he took the blame.

The apology comes after the Daily Echo was inundated with letters and e-mails from disappointed fans who shelled out £37.50 plus booking fees for tickets.

Many called for refunds, complaining of terrible sound quality and a lacklustre performance from Meat Loaf.

However, when asked by the Daily Echo whether fans would be reimbursed, Meat Loaf's publicist David Cox said: "No further comment. He's made that statement and that's it."

Shows in Bath and Nottingham have also hit sour notes with fans.

In a statement on his website, Meat Loaf said the bad weather and small PA system had caused problems with sound levels which the band were unaware of on stage.

He said: "The real story is that on stage we had no idea of the problems that were occurring in the audience.

"I am extremely upset at what occurred and I am extremely sorry and I will take the blame.

"Although I cannot control the weather, I should have been aware that the sound system was not adequate enough to cover the grounds with the amount of people in the audience and with the weather the way it was.

"Forced to limit the sound at that level for over an hour and with the winds blowing so strong, my front-of-house mixer could not hear the mix and so he was struggling with the sound and the weather throughout the entire show."

Meat Loaf said he would personally ensure the sound problems are solved for remaining open-air concerts during the 20-night tour.

He added: "I have instructed all parties in control to make sure there is enough PA so that this kind of terrible, terrible problem does not occur again.

"That does not rectify the problem that occurred in Hampshire but hopefully we will make sure that it doesn't happen again in future."

I have read the stories and comment for the last 3-4 days now. Meatloaf is now 60 years old his classic songs require one big voice to pull off. He is not 21 anymore and people should not expect a tour like his 1981 tour. From the front he sounded good and gave it his all, the band were fantastic and Pearl was good as well. Overal a good night, With the sound restriction and samll bank of speakers the sound at the back was never going to be great. Also, when Barbra Steisand last played in the uk i believe she was askign £500 for a ticket. That said i dont think £37.50 is a bad price for a legendary rocker.

I can't believe how petty some people are to be honest. If your football team loses, will you try to claim the gate-money back off them? By the sounds of every spectator who isn't trying to get their money back, he was just as good as usual if you were close enough to the stage. I don't know what the setup was like there, but if it was like any of the others he played, it would have been easy as hell to get closer to the stage.

Not quite the same style of music (I have Meat and Man Tran on my iPod) - but I saw The Manhatten Transfer last night in the open air (their concert started at 23:45 and finished at 01:30) for 21 Euros.

Welcome back to rip of Britain.

Even George Benson is 21 Euro's later this month.

Venue, Spain.

Absolutely marvellous news for all true meat loaf fans. Thank you for finally taking the blame, whatever the reasons. Lets hope promises are kept and the remaining concerts are a success. Perhaps it would have been nice to offer us Hampshire folk a free ticket to these other concert?? unless of course you are going to come back here, in the near future??? lol

Utter tosh, I saw him at donington in 1983 and he wasn't that good then! He cannot play an outside gig as the accoustics are crap, I saw him again a few years later at the gaumont (mayflower to those of you that are a lot younger than me) and he was fantastic.

Well done you Pete are people so narrow minded this was an open air live performance from a guy 60yrs old who gave everything he had and he did it well - just what do they expect. Perhaps they should go to the likes of Wembly where you are lucky if the guys are on the stage for an hour with unlimited technology to make them sounds good or better still go and watch Amy Whinehouse live!!!!!!!!!!

Slow news month in the U.K or something? This has to at LEAST be the 4th or 5th article on this subject alone from The Daily Echo. Does the owner of these rags have some personal vendetta against Meat Loaf or something? The first story reported that "dozens" of the 10,000 who attended the concert left due to poor sound quality. Now the story has changed to "many" of the 10,000 walked out. Which is it?
Me thinks the this UK rag doth protest too much.
Meat come back to the USA where you're appreciated and treated with some respect.

I was there on sunday night and we walked right up to the front where there were no problems with the sound.
Okay the man is 60 and his voice isn't quite what it used to be but he still put on a great show and gave it all he could.

I'll always love you !

Some people want something for nothing. Yes there were sound issues yes the weather was bad but Meatloaf was awsome. The man is a showman and that is what he did, put on a show. He does not need to apologise to me. Pearl were brilliant also. like father like daughter. Keep on Rocking.

Perhaps this particular meat loaf is past its use-by date by now.

Malcontents should ask for a private performance in their lounge - that might be loud enough for them.

Outside, the elements cannot be ignored. No man is stronger than the wind and rain.

I left the concert disappointed but now I am annoyed. The PA was fine for Pearl and it was fine for Meatloaf's female singers - it was only for Meatloaf that we couldn't hear much. What we could hear was a voice that wasn't powerful enough, couldn't hold a note and by the end frankly sounded the worse for wear. If he isn't up to outdoor concerts then don't do them and stop taking money under false pretences

Although Pearl is adopted, so it's not a genetic thing. Still fantastic, though, when I saw her supporting Velvet Revolver. Did you spot Anthrax's Scott Ian on guitar?

Wow, this might just be the last Meat Loaf story in the Daily Echo. I must say, people, it's been a long old slog and difficult at times, but we got through it and what kept us together was team spirit. Let's see if we can make it through the next debacle... Arts centre, anyone? Rupert Lowe? Or the rubbish in the Polygon?

Ain't you the fella who meatloaf told to work on his verbratto, and has had a vendetta against him ever since?
The same fella who once said meatloaf could have his website for free because it's "called respect" and then has been whining ever since meat said he wanted it?
If so, take your whining obsessed rantings somewhere else.

Meat is still the best.

Well unfortunately I was there unlike some of the contributors; how can you possibly comment on something you did not witness? Backing band sounded great, backing singers sounded great this was no PA issue. A singer needs to reach a note to hold it, remember lyrics and surely appear coherent. The apology given bears little reflection on the reality of the putrid performance.

Here is an update regarding refunds. After the total avoidance of any liability from the ticket agency, Broadlands and Live Nation, I contacted Trading Standards, Hampshire on 08454 04 05 06, they were extremely helpful
Sadly I lost my rights because although I left details of my complaint with security, we stayed because we were with friends – so I had the (highly dubious) benefit of hearing most of the show
However, if you left early because of the sound system problems and/or total disappointment with Meat Loaf’s performance, then you have rights under the Supply of Goods and Services Act. You will need to contact the ticket agency for the refund (it is just like buying clothes or a meal – you complain to the person who sold you the service) –state that you feel that reasonable care was not taken and the level of skill you expected was not present and quote the Act
Don't be put off by anyone avoiding liability, you have rights, use them!!
