Residents in a sticky situation thanks to cul-de-sac roadworks

RESIDENTS of a quiet Southampton cul-de-sac are up in arms after a council repair job left their road "melting".

Families in Matheson Road, Lordshill, say their children, cars and carpets have been covered in thick, black, sticky tar after contractors carried out resurfacing work on their street.

Now the neighbours are demanding action from council chiefs after being left with hefty cleaning bills to remove the sticky substance from their property.

Grandmother Terry Thorn, 48, a healthcare assistant, said: "It's just a nightmare. It ruins our cars and we have had to cut big chunks of the stuff out of our carpets.

"We have had to throw away our grandchildren's clothes because they get covered in it.

"If the job had been done properly in the first place we would not have this problem.

"There was nothing wrong with the road in the first place. I have phoned the council several times but they keep telling us to phone the contractors - but that's not our job."

Contractor Colas were brought in to resurface the road last September. They returned to fix the problem but neighbours say it hasn't made a difference.

Mum-of-two Rachel Taylor, 37, said: "We have all just had enough now as it has gone on for a year and they simply haven't done their job properly.

"I have telephoned the council so many times, but all they have done is sent around a road-sweeper. I won't let my children go out there and play any more because it sticks to their clothes and shoes and won't come off. The cars have lots of tarmac stuck to them as well."

Rachel claims that the road has started melting in the hot weather and car tyres are leaving imprints in the tarmac, which is now crumbling apart.

Southampton City Council Cabinet member for Environment and Transport, Gavin Dick, apologised to residents and said he was aware the road needed some repair work.

He said: "We are currently looking at why the road has deteriorated so quickly and we are talking to our contractors Colas about how the road should be repaired."

Southampton road surfaces are some of the worst I have driven along in the whole country. To me they are seriously dangerous causing people to swerve last minute. I love the way the council never seems to be accountable for any of the shoddy jobs done by overly expensive external contractors. Council are responsible are it is them who take my money to pay for this.

This story has a sticky point to it.
The residents are quite right to STICK to their guns about the situation.

Why are they posing with their arms folded though? Come on residents get a new pose!

Your like a stuck record!

hahaha, look at them in the photo!! All cross-armed and grumpy with nowhere to go!! Truly, these are people with very little to worry about in their lives if they have time to complain about a poorly built road.

Well I cant wait for some hot weather to arrive
because we have just had our road re-surfaced by the same bunch of cowboys and its a right mess already i thought the local playgroup had done it because thats what it looks like not a very professional job at all.

Who checks these roads to see if they get put back properly. The work thats been done at the bottom of Shirley and around Bitterne triangle looks like its been done by Gypsies.

I take exception to Denzil, Chilworth. Not everyone in Lordshill is benifit scum, as you put it. Some of us own our own homes and take pride in them AND we work hard for what we have. I live in Lordshill because that is where I can afford to live, not particularly where I want to live.

I would say that I live in Matheson Road and I haven't seen any problem on the road

The state the surfacing has got into has got nothing to do with hoards of kids on summer break, skidding up and down on thier bikes, skateboards, etc I suppose?
As has already been said on here, You can see there is tar about remove your shoes before entering your homes!

Come on - why should you have to?! The pavements and roads are supposed to be in good condition - after all this is what we pay our taxes for.

I half agree with this statement. The main problems are that a) nobody checks up on the work once completed and b) some contractors get away with hell.

If you have had poor repairs done you need to phone the council immediately, or use their southampton.gov.uk forms to report it. We mustnt let these rogues get away with it!
