A HAMPSHIRE community is today in mourning after an 11-year-old girl and her stepdad died in a motorbike crash.
Terry Stubbs and his stepdaughter Channon were killed after the motorbike they were travelling on collided with a car on the busy A326 near Dibden Purlieu.
The double fatality has devastated a family and sent shockwaves through an entire Waterside community.
And as police today continue to probe the cause of the accident, council chiefs have called for an examination of the road's safety.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene on Saturday morning as the full horror of the crash unfolded.
Traffic came to a standstill as an air ambulance landed on the road, near Beaulieu Road roundabout. But the pair had died at the scene and the driver of the Toyota Corolla car was rushed to Southampton General Hospital with serious injuries.
The female driver's condition is unknown.
Yesterday, dozens of griefstricken friends and relatives arrived at the tragic spot to lay flowers and tributes.
Tearful pals of Channon and Terry comforted each other by the side of the road as they struggled to come to terms with what had happened the day before.
Some left cuddly toys while another left a copy of one of Channon's favourite CDs.
A constant stream of friends and relatives pulled up in the lay-by opposite to pay their respects and leave heartfelt messages.
One card read simply: "You did not deserve to die and I am thinking about you every minute."
Another said: "Dear Channon, we will be missing you always and you will remain in our hearts for ever."
The Daily Echo understands that the 11-year-old had just finished at Cadland Primary School and was about to enrol at Hardley School in September.
Friends said she was a "sweet and happy" girl who liked music and was a popular face around Fawley where the family lived.
Her mum Nicole was too devastated to speak last night.
Alexis McEvoy, New Forest District councillor for Fawley, said residents were in shock at news of the double death.
She told the Daily Echo: "It is yet another terrible tragedy that has hit the community and everybody is devastated by it.
"For such a young girl to lose her life is just too terrible to speak of. I just send my deepest sympathy and condolences to the mum, brother, family and friends and hope in time they can come to terms with it."
The tragic incident has led to calls for the stretch of road, nicknamed the longest, busiest cul-de-sac in Hampshire, to be changed from a single to a dual carriageway.
Dibden Purlieu councillor Malcolm Wade sent his condolences to those families involved and said he believed action should be taken to make the well-used road safer.
He said: "It is a very sad and tragic accident and unfortunately there have been a number of accidents along this stretch of road because it is so well used.
"If we want to make it really safe we need to look at putting in better crossing points and making the road a dual carriageway."
Police are continuing to appeal for the driver of a lorry to come forward who they say directly witnessed the incident.
Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 045 4545.
Anyone who witnessed the collision should contact Totton Roads Policing Unit on 0845 045 45 45.

Sorry Dan Leonard, but your Mums storu just doesn't hang true. What tanker would stop on a roundabout to let someone get on to the roundabout (assuming that it actually happened on the roundabout). They is an unofficial lay by about 100m down from the roundabout, was she pulling out across the traffic from that? Why did the tanker stop? Car should wait until there is a gap in the traffic or go down to the next roundabout a mile away!
Poor old car drivers getting pee'd off about getting overtaken by bikers. They use less fuel, are more fun & you don't get held up in traffic. All big plusses in my book.
By the way this is not a book of condolences, please do not inflict your mawkish behaviour upon us. Grieve in private!

I am not stating that its anyone's fault. Not like the post before me. I am only stating my experience of bike riders on that road. It is well out of order for family or friends to start being judge and jury on a web site like this. What facts do you have ? We don't know the people that died but our hearts go out to their family and friends. The blame should not be put onto anyone as it being an accident. We should put our feelings and thoughts to preventing this happening again. Years ago i remember hearing that when the road was built ESSO offered to pay half with the council for that road to be made as a Duel Carriageway but the council refused and only made it a Single Carriageway. If the echo was willing to do anything about it, we would be the first to sign it as lived here for many years. What say you. REST IN PEACE TERRY AND CHANNON

The offer was turned down because the council at the time thought the dual carrigeway would only encourage too much development, therefore they were trying to protect us. Unfortunately, or, fortunately, development has happened regardless.

Most adults have worked this part of the grieving process out by now, Joe.

I did not see anything in his or her post that said anything about them asking for it. All i saw was them pointing out the fact that no one really knows what happened and leave it for the authorities. Not people on a forum.
I think peoples emotions are clouding their judgment, this really should be closed for the sakes of everyone.

So him or her saying leave it to the authorities to decide the cause of the accident is upsetting everyone? This is not a close shop its an open forum on a news web site. There for everyone to make comments with in reason. His or hers was not unreasnable at all.

ok im sure im gonna get ranted at but........ this is a comment forum. we leave comments about the news story in hand. we discuss what has happened and why it has happened. it is not solely a book of condolences, it never has been. whilst i really do feel for the family of this tragedy, im sick of people saying stop all the other comments. i read these forums daily, sometimes find them informative sometimes not. maybe the echo should open a book of condolences for this family. but we should also be able to comment on the story - take that away and you have no forums. as for denzil, all he said was that the poem was crap, dare i agree with him! heaven forbid me to put what i really feel about this story because you will all just shoot me down, so i will just say condolences to the family, my prayers are with you

Big Boy wrote: Sorry Dan Leonard, but your Mums storu just doesn\\\'t hang true. Poor old car drivers getting pee\\\'d off about getting overtaken by bikers. They use less fuel, are more fun & you don\\\'t get held up in traffic. All big plusses in my book. By the way this is not a book of condolences, please do not inflict your mawkish behaviour upon us. Grieve in private!who the hell do u think u are telling people to grieve in private, if the family who have lost thier loved ones want to read these condolences, this might help them through this tough time and reassure them that they are not alone and people around them are thinking of them in this time of need!!!!!! I hope people who have left heartless messages dont loose loved ones in a tragic accident like this because u will soon regret commenting on this familys loss. i am driver and have never ridden a motorbike in my life, however as a driver if i see a motorbike in my rear view mirror or coming towards me on the opposite side of the road i will make sure i move over to give them plenty of room!!! This is part of having respect of other road users wether it be a motorbike, cyclist, bus, tanker etc... its not hard as a car driver just to move across the road slightly to allow a little more room for motorcyclist. Everyone has accidents, they wouldnt be called accidents otherwise! Also to all those people who are trying to pin point as to who is to blame, get over it, what is done is done, we cant change the past only learn from our mistakes, i understand people have lost loved ones however im sure they are trying to grieve at this moment and the last thing that is on their mind is to pin point who is to blame. All ROAD USERS INSTEAD OF THINKING ABOUT WHO IS TO BLAME THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW TO STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN!!! My Condonlences go out to the family who have lost their loved ones. Although they are not here in person they will always be with u in spirit RIP X
