Accident sends shockwaves through community

A HAMPSHIRE community is today in mourning after an 11-year-old girl and her stepdad died in a motorbike crash.

Terry Stubbs and his stepdaughter Channon were killed after the motorbike they were travelling on collided with a car on the busy A326 near Dibden Purlieu.

The double fatality has devastated a family and sent shockwaves through an entire Waterside community.

And as police today continue to probe the cause of the accident, council chiefs have called for an examination of the road's safety.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene on Saturday morning as the full horror of the crash unfolded.

Traffic came to a standstill as an air ambulance landed on the road, near Beaulieu Road roundabout. But the pair had died at the scene and the driver of the Toyota Corolla car was rushed to Southampton General Hospital with serious injuries.

The female driver's condition is unknown.

Yesterday, dozens of griefstricken friends and relatives arrived at the tragic spot to lay flowers and tributes.

Tearful pals of Channon and Terry comforted each other by the side of the road as they struggled to come to terms with what had happened the day before.

Some left cuddly toys while another left a copy of one of Channon's favourite CDs.

A constant stream of friends and relatives pulled up in the lay-by opposite to pay their respects and leave heartfelt messages.

One card read simply: "You did not deserve to die and I am thinking about you every minute."

Another said: "Dear Channon, we will be missing you always and you will remain in our hearts for ever."

The Daily Echo understands that the 11-year-old had just finished at Cadland Primary School and was about to enrol at Hardley School in September.

Friends said she was a "sweet and happy" girl who liked music and was a popular face around Fawley where the family lived.

Her mum Nicole was too devastated to speak last night.

Alexis McEvoy, New Forest District councillor for Fawley, said residents were in shock at news of the double death.

She told the Daily Echo: "It is yet another terrible tragedy that has hit the community and everybody is devastated by it.

"For such a young girl to lose her life is just too terrible to speak of. I just send my deepest sympathy and condolences to the mum, brother, family and friends and hope in time they can come to terms with it."

The tragic incident has led to calls for the stretch of road, nicknamed the longest, busiest cul-de-sac in Hampshire, to be changed from a single to a dual carriageway.

Dibden Purlieu councillor Malcolm Wade sent his condolences to those families involved and said he believed action should be taken to make the well-used road safer.

He said: "It is a very sad and tragic accident and unfortunately there have been a number of accidents along this stretch of road because it is so well used.

"If we want to make it really safe we need to look at putting in better crossing points and making the road a dual carriageway."

Police are continuing to appeal for the driver of a lorry to come forward who they say directly witnessed the incident.

Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 045 4545.

Anyone who witnessed the collision should contact Totton Roads Policing Unit on 0845 045 45 45.

I can't believe you people are arguing over such silly reasons. Some people have been hurt, someone's mum, dad, brother, sister, boyfriend or babysitter even is going to get a knock at the door with some bad news, that's what matters.

The shock has devastated the whole family and has come on top of other recent tragic events.

We hope the lady driver of the car involved recovers completely and our thoughts go out to her family and friends.

May we reiterate the advises given by some readers to be more than careful on the roads.

You have no respect, two people have died in tragic circunstances and a third is in hospital. Have some consideration for the feelings of the bereaved.
Motorcyclists, car drivers, pushbike riders all have accidents and all should take more care and look out for each other. The report does not contain any details of exactly what happened so don't start pointing the finger of blame just beacuse you do not like motorcyclists.

My thoughts & prayers are with the families of those involved

I was told recently by my mum that the accident was caused by the biker over taking a tanker that had slowed to let the car out, It didnt see the car and plowed into the side of it, Considering she was walking across the forest at the time it was a nightmare for her and she was shoke up about it.... My heart goes out to the families and please if your 2 OR 4 wheels take care of each other and TBH Bus driver i've seen too many bikers use that white line down there as there personal overtaking lane even when its 2 way trafic...

Sorry Dan Leonard, but your Mums storu just doesn't hang true. What tanker would stop on a roundabout to let someone get on to the roundabout (assuming that it actually happened on the roundabout). They is an unofficial lay by about 100m down from the roundabout, was she pulling out across the traffic from that? Why did the tanker stop? Car should wait until there is a gap in the traffic or go down to the next roundabout a mile away!

Poor old car drivers getting pee'd off about getting overtaken by bikers. They use less fuel, are more fun & you don't get held up in traffic. All big plusses in my book.

By the way this is not a book of condolences, please do not inflict your mawkish behaviour upon us. Grieve in private!

it did not happen on the roundabout!!That bit the echo put about it being on the roundabout is very misleading, it happened about half way between the two roundabouts. i drove down the road last night and saw the spot where it happened (the road was covered in white stuff - not sure what that was?) it was roughly alongside where the playing field is off netley view estate.

Big Boy, Hythe says...
7:39am Sun 24 Aug 08

Thank you Driver. I presume then that she was pulling out across the traffic & the tanker driver stopped. Poor decision on the tanker drivers behalf. The lady really should have gone down to the next roundabout. The biker would have also been better served not to have been going quite so fast. Plenty of blame for everyone involved.

No one should speculate as to what happened in this accident, but it has to be said a great many bikers do ride in a manner that is dangerous to themselves and other road users especially on the A32 through the Meon Valley.and speeding through built up areas.

Had the driver not been trying to do a u turn and just used the round about this would never have happened. Before Terry hit the car she almost taken out another motorist it was driving. Its tragic and just a total waste of two young lives

A very sad story. We saw all the flashing lights down towards Hardley when we crossed the A326 on our bikes and we could see immediately it was serious. I was cycling down Butts Ash Lane around 11.30, and a lot of traffic was diverting onto Roman Road at the Beaulieu road roundabout trying to get over to Fawley Road rather than going across the Forest to Hill Top then heading back to Holbury. Unfortunately a very large propane tanker had tried this and couldn't get round the corner, he couldn't reverse because of half a mile of traffic behind him and he couldn't turn round. Anyone get stuck in this and know how this was resolved?

who the hell do u think u are telling people to grieve in private, if the family who have lost thier loved ones want to read these condolences, this might help them through this tough time and reassure them that they are not alone and people around them are thinking of them in this time of need!!!!!!

I hope people who have left heartless messages dont loose loved ones in a tragic accident like this because u will soon regret commenting on this familys loss.

i am driver and have never ridden a motorbike in my life, however as a driver if i see a motorbike in my rear view mirror or coming towards me on the opposite side of the road i will make sure i move over to give them plenty of room!!! This is part of having respect of other road users wether it be a motorbike, cyclist, bus, tanker etc... its not hard as a car driver just to move across the road slightly to allow a little more room for motorcyclist. Everyone has accidents, they wouldnt be called accidents otherwise!

Also to all those people who are trying to pin point as to who is to blame, get over it, what is done is done, we cant change the past only learn from our mistakes, i understand people have lost loved ones however im sure they are trying to grieve at this moment and the last thing that is on their mind is to pin point who is to blame. All ROAD USERS INSTEAD OF THINKING ABOUT WHO IS TO BLAME THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW TO STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN!!!

My Condonlences go out to the family who have lost their loved ones. Although they are not here in person they will always be with u in spirit RIP X

Our hearts & thoughts to those who are hurt & who have perished- Regardless of blame we are all road users & in our usage have a responsibility to each other. Enough blaming & ranting-We can all make mistakes- Thats what makes us human.
This is a poem for Bikers & it wouldn't hurt for our four wheel users to read either.

quote

I saw you, hug your purse closer to you in the supermarket store line.
But, you didn't see me, put an extra £10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday.
I saw you, pull your child closer when we passed each other on the pavement.
But, you didn't see me, playing Santa at the local hospital
I saw you, change your mind about going into the restaurant.
But, you didn't see me, attending a meeting to raise more money for the disabled riders.
I saw you, roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by.
But, you didn't see me, driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window.
I saw you, frown at me when I smiled at your children.
But, you didn't see me, when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless.
I saw you, stare at my long hair.
But, you didn't see me, and my friends cut ten inches off for cancer relief.
I saw you, roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves.
But, you didn't see me, and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none.
I saw you, look in fright at my tattoos.
But, you didn't see me, cry as my children were born and have their name written over and in my heart.
I saw you, change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere.
But, you didn't see me, going home to be with my family.
I saw you, complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be.
But, you didn't see me, when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane.
I saw you, yelling at your kids in the car.
But, you didn't see me, pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me.

I saw you, reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road.
But, you didn't see me, squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn.
I saw you, race down the road in the rain .
But, you didn't see me, get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date.
I saw you, run the amber light just to save a few minutes of time.
But, you didn't see me, trying to turn right.
I saw you, cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in.
But, you didn't see me, leave the road.
I saw you, waiting impatiently for my friends to pass.
But, you didn't see me. I wasn't there.
I saw you, go home to your family.
But, you didn't see me. Because, I died that day you cut me off.
I was just a biker,.....
A person with friends and a family.
But, you didn't see me.

So when are the County Council/Highways Agency going to do the appropriate thing and make this road a dual carriageway? There have been many needless accidents over the years which road improvements would have probably eliminated. Thoughts go to the bereaved's families. And before all the tree huggers start whining about destroying the environment, just put a thought to what comes first: saving rare species of dung beetles or humans. Come on the responsible authorities, do the right thing and improve this nightmare stretch of road

First of all my condolences to the family and RIP to those that died in this tragic accident.

Can I please ask that the Echo does one of two things on these boards as some of the above posts are disgusting in my opinion.

1. Moderate the boards properly.

2. Allow only those who have registered using a checkabable email address to post.

Some of the above posts only hurt all those concerned and that is not right in this day and age.

Please think about this Echo as one day you may be cited in a case where you have been negligent in your responsibility in putting up this facility without making sure its used by responsible people only.

Won't work, unfortunately. Getting another valid email address is an absolute doddle.

Sorry but i live in Fawley and all the bike riders i have seen on the bypass drive like nutters. Its very easy to blame the driver when its convenient to do so. Lets face it, who has ever seen a high powered bike be ridden like someone driving a micra ?

So it's their own fault, and they deserved to die? So you'll be going to the funeral, and making your point there, will you?

I am not stating that its anyone's fault. Not like the post before me. I am only stating my experience of bike riders on that road. It is well out of order for family or friends to start being judge and jury on a web site like this. What facts do you have ? Leave it to people who know their onions and who are not emotionally involved. You have a bare face cheek blaming anyone, when you are bias and do not have the full facts . Do not air your dirty linen on here.

I'm not about to get into an argument with you over it, not here, it's neither appropriate nor compassionate. But for you to insist on your own rights to state an opinion, whilst telling everyone else not to, is pure folly

Sadly it seems that the sad loss of life no way compensates for some peoples loss of moral dignity & common sense.

This is exactly the type of mentality that creates dangerous situations in the first place- Attitude!

Me, me, me & I want it now! Blame everyone else 'cos I am perfect.
Well it might come as a shock -you're not.
No-one is, which is exactly why more care, consideration & respect is required.
So care for those you love, they may be next.
Be considerate towards others- they might not care for your opinion either, & respect all life- it's precious & too short.

Let the fallen rest & pray that your god watches over you.

This poem made me shed tears, as has this tragic, needless incident...yet another family grieving for the loss of not one, but two family members. How do you ever deal with something like this ?? I am at a loss for words.

My sincere condolences and prayers to the family involved.

I too, as a motorist, will now drive with an increased awareness with regard to two wheeled road users. If all of us, whether on two wheels or four, do the same, we might just make the roads a slightly safer place.

Iv not wrote anything inflammatory at all. People have attributed blame before a court of law has, you might find yourselves in breach of forum rules, as that can be deemed a libelous. By stating blame on the car driver on a forum.

If this was a car doing the same thing they would be seen as a maniac, so why is it exeptible for bikes? if the tanker was slowing down to let the car go then the bike should of been slowing down behind the tanker. Just imagine it was a car going past the tanker..... i think peoples opinoins would be alot different. Motorists would not have to be so aware about bikes if the bikes drove to the highway code. I am a biker and use the road everyday! At the crash site there is no need for a U-turn to be considered, as the Hardley roundabout is so close. I've lived here all my life and it's only in the last year that marks showing pedestrian crossing points etc have been added. The bypass is known locally as a dangerous road as so many accidents have happened. The layby's are only really any good for people walking dogs, and 2 weeks after being repaired are back to being pothole filled again. What is the point of them???? Reference the accident..... There are some bikers out there who do push the limits and make people tarnish all bikers with the same brush!!! Please don't assume that in this case, and respect the rider and passenger....as of this point in time Police are still asking for witnesses so people guessing the biker was at fault are out of order. Message to GORF....get a life and have some respect! Friends and family of the 2 people involved will look at these comments, you really are a person with little decorum and intelligence!

Again condolences to all affected.

Years ago i remember hearing that when the road was built ESSO offered to pay half with the council for that road to be made as a Duel Carriageway but the council refused and only made it a Single Carriageway. As far as I know, it was only the stretch up Applemore Hill that Esso offered to subsidise but only on the condition that it was named "Esso Way". The council decided they didn't want to be forced to advertise.

The offer was turned down because the council at the time thought the dual carrigeway would only encourage too much development, therefore they were trying to protect us. Unfortunately, or, fortunately, development has happened regardless.

Condolences to all concerned.

This comment section has gone the same way as previous tragedies. Could the Echo not have two separate links on such reports, one for condolences and another for general discussion of the events? Maybe then we could avoid (or reduce) the flame wars and unnecessary distress to those involved.

I am emailing the editor to suggest this. If you agree, please do the same.

Iv not wrote anything inflammatory at all. People have attributed blame before a court of law has, you might find yourselves in breach of forum rules, as that can be deemed a libelous. By stating blame on the car driver on a forum.

I am merely debating, is that what this site is about? or are you all for free speech on your terms and when it suits you.
Have you ever actually met other human beings? When someone close dies, people have a tendency to apporion blame to others, put their loved ones on a pedestal and otherwise act somewhat irrationally. It helps them deal with their grief, their thoughts at that time are not really located in a coroners court. If it makes them feel better, let them do it. Most adults have worked this part of the grieving process out by now, Joe.

What are you debating? I see nobody rushing to either agree or disagree with you, but I do see a string of people telling you your posts are inappropriate, so it seems you are causing needless anxiety, and are indeed in violation of the Terms and Conditions of the site. Of course you have the "right" to say these things, and to tell people that their friend and relative who just died basically had it coming (which is exactly what you're doing, by the way) but a right does not make it appropriate behaviour.

Leave people alone at this difficult time, show some humanity

Right. Emotions are clouding peoples judgement. Including the Joe Kings of this world, whose only belief is that he has the god-given right to upset people when they're at their lowest.

It is not illegal to carry a child on a motorbike - there is no minimum age, although given the whole business about child seats in cars etc. I find this a bit odd.
That's beside the point - condolences to all concerned, and to all who knew the father and daughter.
And to those of you indulging in petty squabbling and point-scoring - take a look at yourselves. I agree wholeheartedly that these boards need a bit of censorship sometimes - they appear totally unmoderated.

My husband died in a motorbike accident. We wil never know why and what exactly happened. Two people have also tragically lost their lives. We can all say 'What if?' and analyse what happened but it has happened and irrespective of blame, two people have lost their lives and many have been affected by this terrible accident. We can't turn back time and bring our loved ones back. Blame of the biker, car driver and tanker driver is pointless at this stage. People are hurting. For part of us went with you,
The day god called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guid,
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as god calls us one by one,

who the hell do u think u are telling people to grieve in private, if the family who have lost thier loved ones want to read these condolences, this might help them through this tough time and reassure them that they are not alone and people around them are thinking of them in this time of need!!!!!! Also to all those people who are trying to pin point as to who is to blame, get over it, what is done is done, we cant change the past only learn from our mistakes, i understand people have lost loved ones however im sure they are trying to grieve at this moment and the last thing that is on their mind is to pin point who is to blame. first of i would like to send love and strength to all involved with this accident especially terry`s girlfriend, em who is a close friend of mine.
My husband and i both ride and also have two children of our own. My son who is now ten sometimes comes out with us on the bikes and when my daughter is older she will too, neither of my children are forced to ride with us but choose to and enjoy it.
This was an accident and sadly we lose people every day on our roads some on bikes some in cars some just walking, i have had friends who have had accidents at a high speed and walked away some low speed and died or badly injured, every situation is different. We all know that are roads take lives everyday but we all still choose to use them and take that risk weither we are good users or not.
this was a tragic ACCIDENT.
though some of the comments are hard on here i believe everyone has a right to there own opions. some will think i am mad for allowing my children to ride with us some will understand, one thing i will say that Em has said to me and others around her is remember to tell those around you how important they are and that you love them. no one knows when we may lose some one just be grateful for everyday that you are here on the plain.
