SAINTS legend Mick Channon could be back home by the weekend as he continues his recovery after a horror car crash.
The 59-year-old was a passenger in a silver Mercedes, driven by close friend and racing agent Tim Corby, when it left the carriageway of the M1 in Leicestershire.
Mr Corby, 63, died at the scene, while Mr Channon and his youngest son Jack, 15, needed hospital treatment.
Jack, who was described as "battered and bruised" following the accident last Wednesday, was discharged from the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC), Nottingham, yesterday morning and was due to return home.
Mr Channon, a successful racehorse trainer and ex-England footballer, was transferred from the QMC to the private Park Hospital, in Nottingham, on Monday.
Michael Channon told the Daily Echo that his dad, who lifted the FA Cup with Saints in 1976, hoped to be back home by the weekend.
He said: "We just want him to rest and stop worrying about the rest of us. I don't think for the first few days he was aware of how serious it was for himself.
"He's already thinking about getting back to the office. We have told him we will talk about it if he rests for at least two days.
"Hopefully we will have him back by the start of next week, or maybe even the weekend.
"He's in good form and he said to me it's just time and that's the only thing that's going to mend it."
As a result of the crash, Mr Channon, whose stables are in West Ilsley, Newbury, suffered a broken arm, broken ribs, fractured jaw and punctured lung.
Surgeons successfully wired his jaw last week.
Michael, a video producer, said it was a terrifying moment when he heard of the crash.
"It was like one of those moments out of Casualty, with the policeman walking up the driveway," he said.
"You just don't think it will ever happen to you.
"It makes you realise that life is fragile at times and you have just got to appreciate every day, even the bad ones."
Michael added that the Channon family had been overwhelmed by the generous response following the accident.
He thanked everyone who had offered their support to the Channon and Corby families, including staff at the stables and his grandparents Avril and Reg Medcroft, of Thornhill.
"The response from people has just been staggering," he said.
"There have been so many cards, flowers and lovely phone calls and we just have to thank everyone."
